oh, I'm not knocking your choice at all...for what the price of the Mazdaspeed6 is likely to be, there are several other cars I'd rather have...it's a nice development for Mazda though. |

mark T - horse power means nothing,go figure out what happens to overpowered engines like 1.8l turbocharged to 230-250hp.
you'll spend a fortune on fixing the car with lots of horsepower and small engine. |

welll i am looking at it from the point of view of driving a car, the way i see it , i aint on the road for driving and super speeds. All it has to do is drive me from point A to B, and definately has to look good & Obviously should be safe to drive!
and more the Horsepower and all that packed means more power required therfore more gas consumed! |

And to the track I'd take the car often. I do agree with you that a 350Z or WRX STI (barely) would be a better daily driver, and as Carrol Shelby once said, "Horsepower sells cars, torque wins races." That was the old days though, but still holds true *mostly* to this day. By the way, ever driven a WRX STI? They can't go slow. I'd never want one to drive every day, it's just a wild stallion waiting to explode from the gates, a very VERY brutish beast of a vehicle.
On another note the MkV GTI is gonna be a near $40,000 car. VW is pricing themselves right out of the market. Way to go, Pietschreider! They seem to forget that they own Audi too. |

A Suburu WRX STi would eat ANYTHING...If I was in the market for an all around performer it would be an STi...Its all about power to weight ratio & the all wheel drive:) |

not necessarily...not if built right.
if the engine is built and tuned properly (proper tuning is the key), small turbo'd engines are no less reliable than any other, IMHO. There's a well known tuner in the U.S. who's daily driver is a 400+whp Ford Focus, for example.
Many small engines are strong enough to take FAR more than the power they put out from the factory...with compact cars, the performance enthusiast segment is a very small % of total owners. Fuel economy and price are thus far larger factors for automakers.
dEsidEL, you're right...Ford has controlling interest in Mazda (and Volvo, Aston Martin, Jaguar...I'm forgetting some, but those ones for sure).
Vertigo, we agree more than we disagree :D I guess I'm looking at it from the standpoint of owning one car and driving it year round...I think the STi wins, under those assumptions.
I don't think the GTi will be 40k though...a VR6, perhaps...but the 2.0T won't go up almost 10k in MSRP...no way...VW would definitely be pricing themselves out of the market, I agree...that would be a really dumb move.
maxtuh...you don't even need to justify yourself...you made a sweet choice...for that class and price point, the Mazda6 is the only car I'd have considered buying too! |

well, tell me why do you need 400whp+ on the Canadian road for example?

My reasoning: Why not? It's never enough. Except for those morons with 1200 horsepower Supras... By the way, what does a 400hp Supra, a 600hp Supra, and an 800hp Supra have in common? ...12 second timeslips :haha:
My favourite Enzo Ferrari quote was, when asked why the F40 has no radio or speakers, "The only music you require is that of this beautiful engine." That sends shivers down my spine.
Holy I love cars. |

of course you don't need it that level of power...but what does that have to do with a small displacement turbo'd engine being reliable or not?
come on...no one needs a 911 turbo either...nevermind going to that extreme, 95% of SUV owners won't even haul anything, nevermind go "off-road" (if their gas guzzling SUV can even handle off-road terrain, lol). A vehicle is often not about "need" but rather "want" ;)
His Focus has about as much torque as it does hp...It's his daily driver to prove to customers that it's reliable and safe...not just a track or drag car...if you're particularly interested, PM me and I'll provide a dyno, but I've hijacked this thread enough, lol (sorry Maxtuh!) ;) |

lol...yep, power w/o traction = pointless.
one term for those car owners is a "dyno queen"...all they care about are hp & torque numbers :D |

heh very true. Though they still have one of the best indestructable motor to ever come out of japan. The inline 6 2JZ-GTE is a tuners dream! And they still look damn sweet for a 11 year old design.
Also, MarkT is right...the 8s are underpowered. I had one for a week and wouldnt think twice trading it in for a Z or a S2K. The 8s have been dynoed at around 200 and some even at 190 hp. Big blunder by Mazda. But Mazda is relaunching the RX7 by 2007. Rumored to have around 300 ponies. Couple that with the handling of the 8s chasis...I just can't wait!
oh btw lovely six there maxtuh! Enjoy it!:) |
