Paul Oakenfold is pathetic , read this (pg. 3)

I think there's one big problem with everyone who writes about Oakenfold. Make up your minds: Is Oakenfold POPULAR or UNDERGROUND? These two things are mutually exclusive!
Everybody raves about him and says he is "God," his name is the first one that newbies learn about -- well then, he's not that underground, is he? |

Hmmm, wait a minute. First Apoptygma Bezerk is one guy who is Norwegian and is kind of synth pop so that statement could hardly be more false! |

Oakie is trying to commercialize trance in America...I think by working w/Eninem & Dr. Dre he will capitalize on the hip hop audience. Hip Hop & Pop is MAINSTREAM America. Oakie is NOT underground. The more & diverse ppl who work with the bigger the audience becomes. Why do u think the clubs in Ibiza have 4 DJ's in 1 night? To appeal & bring a bigger audience.
I'd like to hear what they'd come up with, I highly doubt the red necks in middle america will appreciate Oakie's trance touch on hip hop. |

Don't think that's true. (hehe, here we go again. :))
They don't remix other people's work just to get a bigger audience, nor does Paul Oakenfold.
Luke Slater did a remix of Madonna's The Power of Goodbye. Hardly any Madonna fan will know that remix. And even if they do know it, it would only make them dislike techno music more. (and that's a good thing!)
Same goes for Deep Dish. I don't think Deep Dish will get a lot of N Sync fans liking deep-house/progressive after listening to their remix of N Sync - Pop.
Another example: Umek recently remixed I Feel Loved by Depeche Mode. No way he will get much Depeche Mode fans liking his techno music. |

first off, did any of you peeps even read the entire interview???? i did and he talks about his new style. he mentions in the interview that he's moved on from the epic trance days and that he's moving more towards breakbeat cuz that's what gets him off these days. he also said that he likes to spin that stuff stateside cuz more of us like it. the album on maverick is gonna be breakbeat with guitars and not trance so please be warned before you go out and buy it. also if he is on the breakbeat tip these days then he should collaborate with one of the top rap producers of all time along with one of the wittiest current rap talents. i will agree with an earlier post that the content of eminem's lyrics are to be desired but you cannot say that the man is a lyrical genius. so much better than a lot of others. so if oakey threw down some breakbeat for them to flip and mix then it would be sweet!!!! and as for oakey's current state.... i've seen him twice in the last year and a half and he was something to be desired but it doesn't mean that he's not a good dj. he just doesn't dj perhaps to our particular taste anymore. and i have to agree with everyone who has mentioned his pioneering status. without oakey stringing together the classics of the epic era to bring forth tranceport, then how many of you would be "tranceaddicts" today? that dude has done a lot for the scene (good or bad depending on how you wanna look at it) so give the man his props. i'll be the first to say that i probably wouldn't go out of my way to see him spin a set but that doesn't mean that the dude doesn't get my respects. anyways....

thanks sweetie for explaining them why i think oakenfold with rap is lame ...
and by the way i didn't discover trance with oakenfold , just wanted to make sure that he has never been my trance "hero"
as for Ferry Corsten i don't like him anymore because he doesn't show up to his gigs , he did that recently here in montreal , 2 times in a row in toronto , and i don't know how many in Boston . If u call this "respect" to his crowd then i don't know what ur respect definition is |

im gonna add my two random facts here:
Oakey remixed Snoop Dogg along time ago, should he have reitred then?
Someone mentioned NERD - Lapdance, guess what, there is NERD - Lapdance(swordfish remix). so its too late i guess.
I see this has dematerialized from a discussion about rap, trance and oakenfold to now being another "youre stupid/oakey bash fest."
Dre IS a legend, Eminem will BE a legend, if simply because he was the first white rapper with popularity AND talent.
Judge Jules has pulled his together to make sets like Qontact, just as Oakey has whipped out the Live in Sydney's. People like different , but has Oakey ever produced a Ministry of Sound Clubbers Guide to Trance album? hell no and that answers your question of who is more underground.
Basically everyone can bitch and moan about Oakey, or praise him endlessly, but frankly it doesnt matter either way. hes NOT going to retire, but on the other hand he MAY never do anything else worthwhile in his career. Personally i like breaks and if thats where he is going, i may just continue to like oakey, especially if there was some phat ass breakbeat rap!
Sure, maybe Oakey needs to retire, but maybe we need to waste less energy bashing him on some random forum on the net...late/
>>oh and on the topic of midwesterners not 'getting' the trance touch on rap: this is another topic that tries to make everyone in the midwest seem like morons...this in itself is stupid, they listen to rap and they also listen to trance, so how in the hell can you say that they wont 'get' it. step off that high horse...damn. |

now you are just trying get out of this discussion without being harmed. Your arguements aren't right. If Oakenfold and rap is lame, well then according to you BT and Deep Dish should be UTTERLY lame. See, it doesn't make sense your arguement. They remixed a song by N SYNC, the most commercial, cheezy, gay-music the pop-world brought us.
So explain please...
how are you going to try to save your ass this time? ;) |

Ok, time for my opinion...
1) I'm sick of people saying Oakey sucks.... Just admit it - you don't like his track selection... doesn't mean he sucks... as a DJ his skills are better than ever - he can mix blindfolded with a hand behind his back. You just don't like the records he plays. Now lets all grow up and just admit this instead of saying he "sucks".
2) I hate rap (used to listen to it in high school, used to think i was a thug, and all that bull)... i guess its just the attitude of some rap, the whole "what the f@ck you staring at?!" BS that a lot of the people that listen to hip hop dish out to you on the street... that whole "hard-ass" lifestyle i can't stand. If you talk about the music itself, i still do not enjoy any of it really, maybe relishing in the old Tribe song here and there... As far as a collaboration, i'm interested in hearing how it will come out - just for s and giggles though, i hope it doesn't become main-stay. the last thing i want is to see some hip-hop thugs show up at my trance club and start fights in an otherwise peaceful atmosphere...
3) I have to agree with Lost - did any of you READ the interview? Oakie is just trying something different - he's already been there/done that with the trance scene, he is allowed to do whatever he wants... if he wants to be a pioneer (as he was with trance years ago), then let him.. you are allowed to "not like him anymore", just enough of this "Oakie sucks" BS.... b/c he doesn't.. his skills are still there, you just don't like his track selection.
4) I've seen Oakie 4 times in the last 9 months.... Each liveset has been totally different, and each liveset has kicked ass.... He even spun an uplifting/epic liveset reminiscent of '99 but with newer tracks.... - i saw him throw down some breakbeat records slipped in during his Mekka set.... LET THE MAN EXPERIMENT!!
5) Judge Jules is o.k., but not better than Oakie.... just b/c he has one or two good livesets doesn't make up for over a hundred good Oakie Livesets that are floating around out there... Then again, Jules doesn't suck either...
6) ENOUGH WITH THE UNDERGROUND AND MAINSTREAM BULL ALREADY!! jesus just listen to the music... i dont care if its mainstream or underground, who's what, or what.... if the music excites my ears, i'll listen to it... i dont care if its f@cking NSYNC.. i'm not going to follow what everyone else thinks.

Good to see you again Rob
for the first point : i agree with you . Yes , i admit it , i don't like Oakey's tracks selection , and that's why i say he sucks .
second point : i don't want to see some thugs coming to the house (since Trance clubs don't really exist here over north America) , that's why i wouldn't like the idea of mixing ^electronica^ with other genres . By the way i have never agreed that BT & N'Sync was a good thing , i've never said that , i even dissed him in an older thread for that
third point : don't worry Robby i have read the interview before starting my thread . As you say i am allowed to "not like him anymore" and i think that's what i am or i have been expressing since the beginning .
fourth point : i saw him only once BUT i have downloaded a couple of his sets and he's not that great (remember this is my opinion and i have the right to think like that)
fifth point : i agree with you that JJ is ok , but i made a comparison between his Qontact set (only and only Qontact set , not his whole carrier) and all Oakey's set from 2000-2001 . And i think i prefer by far JJ's Qontact set
sixth point : same here , i don't really care about underground and mainstream , the proof is i do listen to Safri Duo - Played , Barthezz - On The Move and to JJ's radio 1 shows (JJ again)
As a conclusion , trust me Robby , i don't follow other's tastes or opinions , i'm expressing mine . Once again it's good to see u again here :) |
