i wrestled in high school and the best advise i could give u would b to b to get the basics down(how to fall, simple takedowns & pins). its important to have a strong foundation b/c alot of the more advanced moves build on these fundementals.
also, the most important thing u can do early in a match is to b the agressor and set the tone for the match right from the start.let your opponent know u mean business and is in for a tough match. while wrestling is a team sport, it's actually an individual sport too. a huge part of wrestling is the mental game. u b surprised how far u can go in wrestling w/ mastering a few moves and take-no-prisoners attitude on the mat.;)
hope i've helped
good luck bro:D |

thanks for the help.
Yeah it does help, i'm gonna try and get the basics down as much as i can this week and just work on them.
Does anyone have any advice on the muscle groups i shoudl work out? I mean i have a good build for my size and age(used to be in body building big time) but i dont know which muscles should be the strongest, i was planning on hitting the shoulders a lot and trying to get a look that could intimidate the other person. |

my best advice to you is whenever you get taken down always go straight to your stomach. DO NOT GO TO YOUR BACK!!!! you will get pinned right then and there. also the best thing you can do defensively is spral. as soon as someone goes to take a shot on you throw your legs back and force all your weight on to his back. if hes got any brains he'll try to keep working for that takedown and you just keep trying to go behind for the two. youve got the advantage being on top.
as for conditioning, just watch what you eat and drink plenty of water. it will clear out your system. dont worry about weight cutting and all that . only do that if you have to drop a class.
how much do you weigh? it diffrent for the classes. i wrestled for 9 years and i coach rec teams now and there are diffrent mind sets for 45 pounders and heavyweights. |

First learn the basics and get a good Condition.
After this, you can learn some sneeky trics and stuff |

Damn..I havent checked this forum in ages..this is my specialty(I was 6th in Canada in my class)
so tips eh? Conditioning and flexibility, and a good grip. Those 3 will take you many places. Also the ability to dislocate you shoulders on command is nice, but not a necessity.
so, well I dont know your body type or anything, but personally, I hate throws, I love legs attack, and on the ground, I am the king of arm bar combinations(tilt, exposure+5, go back, fake other way, pin)
A good quick shot will do you good in any situation, even if just to get him light on his feet, and if he sprawls on your head, get it out of there, get your feet under you, look to the sky and lift with all your might. Now you should be standing w/ him on your shoulders, drop him like an evevator, but move your head(or else you give yourself a DDT)
now if u got the shot clean, then dont bother being fancy, just trip the mofo, being single leg trip (personal fave) or a double leg cut, get that mofo down. If he wants to go to his back so be it, but since that is stupid, let him go to his stomach while falling(can be very embarasing when u trip, and they throw you to your back in the air) so..now u r on top of them and they are on their stomach. ARM BAR THEIR ASS. if u dont know this move..well learn it.(reach under their armpit, grab onto wrist, DRIVE person forward over their arm, then tilt it outwards, this causes their hip to come up, tug on hip, and either roll thru, or tilt for 5 seconds) then do that again, and this time he will probably defend by lifting near hip, slide your leg in and go for a leg ride, work this combo until u win on points, or their defense slips up and you can pin easily. Whatever you do...DONT LET GO OF THAT ARM. its your lifeline when u are underneath.
there...a nice offense, now for your defense...umm..again, Im horrible @ throws, so dont get into that situation, they hurt and are tough to get out of.
he shoots, single leg..well drive your fore head into his temple and RIP your leg down. if that doesnt work, go to your stomach, and be strong(ill talk about par terre later)
on a double, in SPRAWL LIKE NUTS. Drive your hip into his skull. AND DONT LET HIS HEAD ON THE SIDE. as long as his head is down, you have a massive advantage, cuz u cant lift w/out your back...so his head is down, u can do many things and some involve grabbing his ass, so well, SPIN...spin oneway, then the other sooner or later u will get around his arms and end up behind, now do what you like cuz u r on offensvie again. Other thing to do..PUSH down on the back of his neck and put his forehead into the ground. Reach thru his arm, to your own arm, and its kinda like a backwards half nelson, flip and pin. Or if u get halfway around him and hes still holding onto your leg, cross face the mofo, wind up w/ an open palm and take the bridge of his nose out. It hurts like a bitch, isnt nice, but is very effective and will make him scared of you...
so par terre defense... Well there are different ways to this, and depends on your body type..so really, I Like to stay stiff until he makes a move, then flail like nuts. like if the ref puts us in parterre, ill drop, put my head up rigid neck(leaving myself open to a cross face, but ill deal) and my palms out flat on the mat. If he backs off of me, ill get up, so do what you will..leg ride, im flexible, and can not go over while being riden until he is too far, and i hop on top. half nelson, wipe it off, arm bar, grab your own arm. Gut wrench... heres my weakness, i cant defend this worth .
there...my wrestling tutorial. if u have specific questions, ask away. I even coached for 2 years |

great, we're in practice now and learning moves along with how to counter them.
As for my body type, i'm almost 5ft4in i'm around 118 now, i'm the type with short arms and legs, but with a long wide upper body. I lifted weights for a long time so i have a nice body and am pretty stong, i am incredibley light though considering the way i look.(i think its because i have small hands, which means frame, and not a whole lot of muscle on my legs). I have very muscular though with some fat, my biceps were the ones people would ask to see over and over again.. i'm just real light which is good.
I suck at trying to take leg shots, i'm better and throws and stuff. I've been working out my shoulders as one of my favorite muscle groups for awhile, i think thats helps but does anyone know anymore?
But does anyone have any tips for going agains the bigger guys? i'm like second lightest and i have to wrestling heavier guys a lot and they always pin me but i know its good practice. |

if you have to drill against heavier classes id say try to use your quickness as an advantage. i was 189 my senior year after bumping up from 171 and sometimes id have to go 215 so id try to use my quickness to an advantage. i really couldnt shoot in on them due to the weight diffrence, so i tried to slow down the match and wait for the to make a mistake. i was quite strong(365 bench max) so i was able to snap them down or throw headlocks. i would have liked to do more double overhook throws and the like but im only 5'9. try to use a firemans carry. when tying up use your strengh to push into the guy. most likley he'll push back into you. when he does catch his outside arm, level change and shoot like your going for a high crotch(while keeping his arm!) and his momentum will carry him over you and you can scoop his head when he is on the mat with his other arm and you can get him in a headlock and just choke the out of him for the rest of the period. actually scissor you legs out so you do risk the chance of getting to high and getting rolled over.
if you can do it ask j-spot about legs. i sucked at it :D :D |

alright..so you suck @ leg attacks? WELL BUDDY CMON! IMO legs are THE game of wrestling(actually its a head game, but legs work well) so u want single? double? ankle pick? Doesnt matter, it all starts with a good first step.
now ill go ankle pick, cuz its sooo damn tricky(devious), say you wanna pick HIS right ankle (your left side) then circle that way, until you get a tiny angle on it, not much is needed. then DIVE for it, cupping his ankle with your left hand, while getting back on your feet for a back heel trip.*BAM hes down. this entire thing(from shot to fall) should be about 3-4 seconds, so you had better be quick for this one, but nobody really expects it cuz cmon, who dives @ an ankle. Oh..and you only need it off the ground so that the other leg is weighted 100% dont really need to stand with the leg
Now a single, well, first step is OUTSIDE of his stance. with your head under his chest and your hips to the side. If youve got this far and have a hold of his leg, STAND YOUR ASS UP! get a GOOD hold of that leg, cuz hes gonna be trying to get it back. If you try to trip, and he thinks haha, i can jump over a trip and grab onto you..SLAM him.(like WWF) its fun..but can hurt you and him alot. when he bounces off the mat and hits you again..just regain your breath and continue. you can step back and squat, trip, knee roll..but these are all kinda hard to describe...so ill leave it up to your coach.
Double leg...heres my technique..in your stance take a small step in between his stance, go to your knee and EXPLODE off of it with a shoulder to his gut, stand @ the same time. The shoulder should knock the wind out of him, and give u an advantage. SO now hes on your shoulder, U can be mean or nice. Evelator slam, peach basket(very safe, but such a move)-> hes on your right shoulder, take your left hand and grab thru his legs, and around to the side/back of HIS left leg. go to a knee, and pull across your body while lowering your shoulder, keeping him in control w/ your head. He SHOULD stay on his back if you keep your weight on him, makes for an easy pin, but can easily be defended with a cross face while in the air...then u drop him, and he attacks, and suddenly you are ed.
But you like throws..what tie up do you like? Over under(please say yes, its the most controling one!) elbow collar->I HATE THIS, but quite effective @ low levels of competition.
so say u r in elbow collar tie up. with your right arm on his neck, and left on his arm. if hes rigid and defending against any movement, push IN on his elbow, which he should react against my throwing it up, give him some encouragement with it. Then make your move, using your left foot as a pivot, spin quickly(obviously releasing the collar)and rip thru under his arm with your arm that was on the collar, now grab onto his shoulder with your right hand(YOU should be facing the same direction as him now, pop your hips to get him light, then drag his arm across your body and do a roll type motion which should throw him to the ground. Now on the ground, if you kept the arm, pin his wrist to the ground and apply pressure on his chest w/ all your body, stay on your toes, yadda yadda...PIN.
Any more questions?(ps all this makes me wanna get back into it) |

| i didnt mean taking shots at the legs. i had a great high crotch, double, and bullet single. i was a terrible leg rider when i was on top. i was good at defending it though |

ahh..leg ride. WELL...fun fun fun, cuz u get to squeeze his head like a melon!
so...there any many ways to get into a leg ride, and heres my fave(next to the arm bar above) so, you are behind him, and hes flat on his stomach, sit up(on your knees) with 1 knee in between his thighs, the other on the outside, now you need him to raise a hip, so that you can pick it and slide you leg underneath. Best way I figure is to fake a gut wrench so that he defends that and lifts a hip, slide the inside leg under his thigh, keeping your own legs close to his hips(more leverage) now try to lock your legs (ie lock your ankle to thigh) and lean to the oposite shoulder, this will put immense presure on his lower back, and if hes weak or cant take it, hell roll over for a simple pin, if he doesnt go over, reach under his chin, and grab the top of his head, pull that backward(yeah it looks painful, and it is) and lean over again, he had better go with it, or else you are gonna break his back...now once you get him over, you can grab his ankle(if u grab his toe by accident, the ref will break the hold) and pull it towards his head, so in the end you got a head being pulled towards his feet, and a foot being pulled towards a head, and well, its quite painfull, once you get him over exposed for the 5 seconds, readjust your weight for a pin.
hmm..now that doesnt seem right. Ask your coach for a better instruction, kinda hard to describe. |

thanks, this is all good stuff. Most of it we already learned but we are getting into it a lot more.
I do have one question, i find myself in this position a lot with the lighter guys in my group(the beginner group). What i do is i try and set the shot up, what happens is i go for a leg and the guy sprawls but i still have one hand on the back of his leg. Sometimes i can get it back but hes usually up and trying to prevent me from getting up.. i try doing this tripod thing but that doesnt work well with me.
Today was a real tough practice, we got this other ass't. coach in who worked us to hell.. we ran so much, did hit drills until i almost vomited and so many push-ups(like in between everything).
Today i can honestly say i've never worked out that hard ever, i forget msot of it because it was so painful.. constant motion. But best thing i could of done this year in school.
Also any specific muscles i should work out? i figure running gets the legs, also maybe some squats because you lift a lot.. but like how about the shoulders, chest, arms.. which are most important?
thanks again for the help, also any advice on how to make the running not suck as much? Like what to eat, not eat.. drink. We get to watch the gymnastic girls though, thats great |
