| hey when you talk about hitting a gut wrench why wouldnt you just scoot you hips out and hit a switch and go behind for the two? or grab his arm on the outside of your body and hit a peterson roll? |

running just plain sucks. thats it. when i was in high school my coach never made us run cause his theory was you dont run in a match so why should you do it in pratice? but he made us spin like there was no tommorrow ;)
when a guys spawls on top of you do and you have the far leg(cause he'll be trying to spin behind you if he has any brains at all) suck it into your body and push down on it with your stregnth. if hes a beginner then hopefully he'll fall to his side and you can grab his wrist or catch his head and set a pin
and dont get me started about throwing up. ive spent many a nite by the toilet after a hard pratice or an evening in the boiler room |

and I have spent many a days before a weigh in forcing myself to puke.(at the coaches demand)
so..when u say he sprawls on you, im assuming double leg right? Give up the double and head for a single, get your head on the outside, cuz in case your coach hasnt taught you this yet, wherever you head goes, the body goes. Get your head to the outside. and if he spins, spin with him. Itll wear holes in your knees, so I suggest investing in kneepads. <--speakin of protection, wear headgear. It looks gay, feels bad, but it saves your ears. I got minor cauliflower ear @ the end of 96(after nationals) and after that we have the summer off..so I got lucky and the swelling went down and now I just have a extra flap of skin(if you werent looking for it, you wouldnt find it). I do however know guys, who have had surgery to get their ears drained, had buttons sewn in, bla bla bla and how have the nastiest lookin ears on the planet. And the ladies dont like it too much. |

alright, yeah people were telling me about that.
We had a scrimage today against a few other schools.. damn, i totally got my ass beat out there. All the people i wrestled have been doing it for atleast 2 years, some to 4. I got bruises everyhting but it was fun, even though i got my beat and my knee got ed up(i sprawled, he got the bottem while sprintint into me, my thigh went back while the bottem stayed in place and while his shoulders came into me.. i hope i'm good monday).
It makes sense, we dont run in it, but this one guy did charge me and that worked, plus you need real strong legs and it helps build the whole body up so you can last longer.
We spin like hell too, especially when we have this one guy coach.
Anyways if i get stuck i'll ask here, i seriously need to know more moves, hopefully they'll teach them to us before the next time we have to wrestling other people.. and hopefully i'll look good too. |

| THis one kid said i shoudl get help on bridges.. i'm not really sure what they are but i guess its like when your down. Usually when i do go down i dont know what to do to get up real fast. |

ahh yes, bridging. kept me alive in many a match. :D :D
anyways, if you are ever turned to your back or are in your back in genral, try to push up using your head and your far shouder while on your toes and arching your back. its tough and painful but if you can hold out there the its a good way of avoiding a pin. plus if hes to high up on you then you scoot your arm free and use his own momentum to reverse him to his back. but dont go looking for that cause its pretty rare. ask one of you coaches to show you cause the way i described it might be a little misleading. |

Trinangles are mostly stable things, so that the idea with a brige, youve got 3 contact points with the ground, so heres what you do,
you are on your back, but not yet pinned. Get you feet up under you, so that you can PUSH, so you look upwards(if standing) but its really backwards, and DRIVE HARD with your legs. What this should do is lift you off of you back and cause some separation between you and the ground. Next thing is to drop your shoulder, and rotate around using your head as a pivot until you are on your stomach. this is a bit harder if hes holding an arm, and in that case, try to squirm your way out of bounds. Just a warning tho, you can hurt you neck, and its very tiring to be bridging with somebody on your chest. |

i had my second scrimage this saturday, overall i'd say i did pretty good. THey were minute matches, i had two. The first guy was good and pinned me right away, he took me by surprise :(
The second guy was some times later(2hours maybe, long day) and i lasted the first round, he got a few take down pounts, the second round he got more points and i almost pinned him, i would of if i threw the half a bit harder, he got around and pinned me.
The thing i need to work on is getting points, if i'm on my base(knees and elbows, about to push up to get away) what is a good way to get out and then get some take down points?
Thanks for the help, its helping and i'm thinking about seeing the couch and askign for some help on the side.
PS. is there a way to roughen up my drill partner? hes a bit of a , still pins me cause he out does me by 25lbs and is much taller but i want to get good and that is made from hard work. |

if you want to get out just stand up and point out your hip and slide his grip apart. i always did that. sometimes the most simple things worked the best. when youre on your base though try to hit a switch. i really didnt do it cause i felt that i couldnt hit it quick enough and id leave myself open to get pinned. ask your coach about switches.
its good that youre asking your coaches for help on the side. they can give you better tips in person than i can by posting and it shows them that you want to better yourself and coaches love that. i always stayed later to work on moves and as a result the coaches had me wrestle a few matches on varsity as a freshman.
as for your drill partner see if you cant work in with the more experienced guys. you might get beat on a bit but it will certainly help you in matches. when i was a freshman i worked with a kid who took third in the state the previous year and another kid who won two region championships his first two years in high school. both those kids were on team new jersey freestyle/greeco clubs and they made me a lot better cause they beat my ass constantly but i was able to pick up things that they did and i was able to use it in my jv matches and i found them to be a lot easier than practices. remember, the better your partner, the better you are. im sure j_spot can attest to that |

First off, if you get into any wrestling serious, get used to waiting around. A whole day(matches starting 9 am, finishing @ 9 PM) u can have as few as 2 matches..and u wait alot. Dont try to stay warm the entire time you will kill yourself. But during the matches, go all out. The ref should have to lift your arm cuz you are too tired to @ the end of the match. I know rules here, you had to have 30 minutes between matches..so if u get unlucky, snack on some chocolate about 3 minutes before the match, keep lotsa fluids, and get ready to cramp up. Its not pleasant, but if you are on defense, I want to see some guy hold me down when I get a leg cramp..not likely.
And really your partner does make you better. He should push you, but not kill you. passive defense drills work well on this. I got lucky. The U of C has many world Champs, and I got to train day in day out with 1 of em.
soo...getting points. well 5 point throws are a quick, but risky way. and Ive only ever seen 1. I was on the receiving end. That match was over before I knew it. You dont need 3 point take downs, or anything fancy. I worked my points on teh ground off of tilts like I said before. They worked for me, maybe not for you. Try leg rides, or leg locks/ankle locks. Maybe that will work for you. I cant tell.
About getting up. Its not always the best. If you can, just hold him and the ref should break it up, and let you stand again. I find getting off your stomach and elbows very hard, and I wont give tips on it...but if on you knees and hands, go for his grip like integrity said. Try to rock your torso back n forth a bit. Dont let him get comfortable down there where he gets time to think about what to do next. Make him react to whatever you are doing. Be an aggressive defender 95% of the time, and a ROCK the other 5% giving nothing.
Wrestling is aggressive, as im sure youve noticed by now. There are penalties for passivity(and it makes for a boring match to watch) BE THE AGGRESSOR. sure you will make mistakes, but hey, you will learn from it and do better next time. n And go out 140% all the time. its such a short bout that you will get lactic acid cramps, and thats good...shows you worked hard. |
