Personally I enjoyed Reflections. I would still enjoy it if PvD hasn't been incessantly hammering it's tracks for 2 years. Paul did everything but songwrite the lyrics to the album. Not even Sasha, and definitely not Tiesto can say that about their albums. |
eh? pvd DID write the lyrics on the album mate....he didnt record the lyrics in his own studio if thats what you mean...thats life was written by him, so was like a friend, (but he changed it alot with jan johnsen);) :) |

I don't think Reflections was a commercial album, but more of a musical experiment that blew up the laboratory in a comical yet painful way.
Points for trying something different, but sadly it turned out rather substandard in my opinion. None of the experiments really turned out right, but if you picked it up and had never heard of Paul van Dyk, it may well be a good album, just we were expecting a killer tech-trance album more suiting his style. |
I think that's a very fair and accurate evaluation. |

Underground? Oh dear.
The US market holds no special significance. Most epic trance has been mainstream elsewhere for a while now (1999, really). The epic subgenre as whole reaped the consequences of this and finally hit the ter by the end of 2002.
With regards to the award, it's totally useless that a compilation and artist album would be in the same category. Creamfields doesn't belong. |

Its insane...how easily we citisize something that we cant even do oursleves or come close to it. Can anyone in this thread even come up with a track which comes close to any of the tracks on "Reflections"??
I aint just talkin' bout you guys lambasting PvD but other DJ's too.... I would like to hear one of you guys mix a set as close to the perfection that Paul achieves, or produce a single track which shines with his quality.
As far as "commercialization of trance" is concerened, it only means one thing, more people will get into this artform thru the way of commercial trance tunes (Cheese), trance, which anyways is not understood by many. Once they do get into this genre say thru mainstream trance....as they listen more and more they with time will get elite....thats how our tastes devlope doesnt it?? I still remember enjoying ATB - 9'pm till I come....but then again thats how it starts....then we go deeper....its all about taste and quality then....
Respect to all the DJ's...let hem do their own thing...No one asked you to go out and buy the "Reflections" CD. Its always a choice you make....Its all these DJ's that give me the Euphoric feeling that I get day after day when I listen to their tunes, sets and videos.
Trance is here to stay.

Reflections sucked... plain and simple. If it does get grammy, perhaps it will help me push it on ebay or something - coz' I need to get rid of that suckka.
Oh, another thing - look how unfair the world is:
PvD - no formal musical education, manages to get nominated for award for album.
BT - playing music since 2, wrote number of scores, crazy ass-mofo and father of many "trancey" trends that get borrowed left and right, a righteous mofo... but no award! Well, it could be because "emotional technology" blew bigger balls than Michael Jackson will be blowing soon, nonetheless... Which further goes to show that education and tallent don't necessarily mean you'll be recognized.

BT isn't on there because BT is one of the guys who helped put EDM into the grammys. i'm not a fan of PVD but you don't have to have a musical background to write good music. ie. Paul Mccartney can't read music. |

Yeah, but none of us make hundreds of thousands of dollars every year for it, and none of us have been DJing and producing for over a decade either. Given that amount of experience and his past record, we've every right to criticise PVD. |

Creamfields was a good album.
Good track selections imo and good mixing.
But yeah.. reflections shouldnt win.
So i guess its all about the 2 big edm genres huh?
