I love Reflections too.
Best drink coaster I've ever had, and doubles as a mighty fine frisbee. :p
I don't think Reflections was a commercial album, but more of a musical experiment that blew up the laboratory in a comical yet painful way.
Points for trying something different, but sadly it turned out rather substandard in my opinion. None of the experiments really turned out right, but if you picked it up and had never heard of Paul van Dyk, it may well be a good album, just we were expecting a killer tech-trance album more suiting his style. |
No way in hell man...
.
I hated REflections for a year as well...
BUt after a while i started listening to it again for no apparent reason...
I loved it...
I especially liked:
-spellbound
-Never Forget
-Nothing but You...
The only reason i think most people don't like it at the start is because it's totally differnt to PVDs other ....
That's why most PVD fans would be put off...
Nice work Paul!!! :D |

I aint just talkin' bout you guys lambasting PvD but other DJ's too.... I would like to hear one of you guys mix a set as close to the perfection that Paul achieves, or produce a single track which shines with his quality.
As far as "commercialization of trance" is concerened, it only means one thing, more people will get into this artform thru the way of commercial trance tunes (Cheese), trance, which anyways is not understood by many. Once they do get into this genre say thru mainstream trance....as they listen more and more they with time will get elite....thats how our tastes devlope doesnt it?? I still remember enjoying ATB - 9'pm till I come....but then again thats how it starts....then we go deeper....its all about taste and quality then....
Respect to all the DJ's...let hem do their own thing...No one asked you to go out and buy the "Reflections" CD. Its always a choice you make....Its all these DJ's that give me the Euphoric feeling that I get day after day when I listen to their tunes, sets and videos.
Trance is here to stay.

Well mate, that's the main reason why TranceAddict Exists... so music critics can do their stuff.... |

Underground? Oh dear.
The US market holds no special significance. Most epic trance has been mainstream elsewhere for a while now (1999, really). The epic subgenre as whole reaped the consequences of this and finally hit the ter by the end of 2002.
With regards to the award, it's totally useless that a compilation and artist album would be in the same category. Creamfields doesn't belong. |
wats epic trance anyway??? |

My taste didn't develop via commercialism
I find that people who start off commercial, usually stay commercial.
ppl who start UG, usually stay UG>...
the only problem is promoting Commercial to spend time on UG... |

no i think thats far from true
in this country most people start of going round town listening to cheesy trance tracks till eventually they will hear a really old oakey or picotto track in the nightclub then gradually get into proper trance.
Peoples music tastes change all the time at the moment i dont really like trance i think its abit and i very much doubt ill ever like it again in the same way that i used to. |

Roughly speaking, a decent timeline of tracks would be:
Flaming June -> Galaxia -> Gouryella -> Another Way -> Synaesthesia -> Tenshi -> Epic Monolith -> Solarcoaster -> I'm Alone -> Nothing But You -> Sincere -> Velvet Morning -> Crush -> and so on...
Citing Rank 1 - Airwave and System F - Exhale is technically correct, since they are epic trance, but if you want to be specific, that's Dutch trance; those two tracks basically set up the subgenre, and then Armin got the snowball rolling. |

I've heard almost every single one of those tracks...
Does that mean just because they're awesome, and dutch, they're Epic Trance? |

OK, well, i find that they're are two breeds of people:
Commercial + UNderground.
I find the commercial guys don't usually like underground. ANd VIse Versa. But maybe it's just the fact that both sides need to get used to it. Even though commmercial is just anyway... |

No. "Dutch Trance" is a subgenre of "Epic Trance", in much the same way that Epic Trance is a smaller part of "Trance". Dutch Trance emerged from Epic around 2000 mainly thanks to Rank 1, Armin, and other Holland producers; hence the name "Dutch" trance.
The usual hallmark of Epic Trance is a melody around 32 bars or more, supported by a bassline and kick. These two elements derive, respectively, from epic house (dream house, etc.) and anthem trance (superclub trance, etc.) BT, Paul van Dyk, and Ferry Corsten were who essentially put the genre together.
As for Dutch trance, no, it's not just because it's Dutch. Dutch trance takes the epic breakdown and extends it into an absurdly long melodic interlude, sometimes even half the length of the track. Also, the melodies themselves are often jacked up to 64 bars or longer. Airwave patented the usual Dutch interlude, where there's no kick or beat, but lots of fluffy strings, followed by a "massive" return of the intro segment beefed up with the new insanely long melody.
So in relation to what I posted before, Rank 1 - Airwave and System F - Exhale are Dutch trance. The rest are not. But it's all epic trance, really.
Ishkur gives a good representation of this, but I'll have my own up in the coming months. |

That's a really simple and, well, incorrect understanding. There's a continuum between whatever "underground" is and whatever "commercial" is. Trying to draw a line between the two is like trying to draw a line between two colors on a spectrum. |
