3 years in jail for teen's killer
Youth's sentence angers family of 17-year-old victim
Girl was slain by a blow to her head with a baseball bat
HAROLD LEVY
STAFF REPORTER
The youth justice system has failed, says the aunt of 17-year-old murder victim Laurel Price.
Members of Price's family were in the courtroom yesterday as Ontario Court Judge Faith Finnestad sentenced a 17-year-old Toronto youth to three years in prison followed by three years of community supervision for fatally striking the girl in the head with a baseball bat.
Although the youth had originally been charged with first-degree murder, he was permitted to plead guilty in October to the second-degree murder of Price in the Feb. 20, 2003 attack.
Christina Neuth, Price's aunt, told the Star she didn't think anyone in her family was content with the workings of the youth justice system.
"He committed murder and in five years he gets an education and is back in society where he does not belong," Neuth said.
Prosecutor Tony Loparco said that since the youth had spent 22 months in pre-trial custody, Finnestad had imposed close to the maximum sentence for second-degree murder under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, which is four years secure custody and three years community supervision.
The youth acknowledged in an agreed statement of facts read into the court record that Price returned to her Scarborough home on the day of the attack to find that her room had been ransacked, her stereo smashed, her clothes placed in garbage bags and several items were missing.
Price, a former student at Winston Churchill Collegiate Institute, learned the items were at the home of the 17-year-old boy, and her boyfriend drove her to his home to confront him.
Her boyfriend remained in the driver's seat while she approached the home's side door.
The 17-year-old came out of the house armed with a baseball bat, ran to the car and confronted Price's boyfriend, who backed the car to the foot of the driveway.
The youth then approached Price and, using a two-handed swing, struck her once on the back of her head with the bat with a great deal of force before fleeing.
He threw the bat into a sewer and later turned himself in to police.
Price was taken to hospital but died the next morning.

^^^ I just read that too...disgusting.
so the life of a girl is worth 3 years in the eyes of lawmakers and the court...great. The Young Offenders Act needs revision...NOW.
yet another case of people not being held accountable for their actions. This isn't one of those cases where a fistfight ends up with more serious consequences then usual (ie. death instead of a broken nose or something)...this is a kid swinging a ing bat full force at a girl's head??? sickening. |

OMG! I feel sick to my stomach, for two reasons. For that poor boy and for the fact that his murderers are going to be protected under the Young Offenders Act. they so knew what they were doing. So sad...
Signed. |

I am terribly sorry about society being to blame for this to occur.
SIGNED
I am shocked at this incident.
**on a side note in third year University I did a documentary on Male Rape and interviewed 10 men that were raped by men in their lives. It was so difficult for me to hear the stories, but it is an issue that is rarely discussed and needs to be brought to everyones attention. B/c it sadly happens and it happened to this young man. and for that i am so sorry :(
:(
wishing for peace and happiness all around the world!~ |
