Police want videos taken at nightclub
19-year-old slain defending friend at hip-hop event
'There was a fight and it was out of control' at College St. club

EMILY MATHIEU
STAFF REPORTER

Klee Magor and Benny Brahmz had just finished tossing out two guys for fighting at their CD-release party when they found Nabil Saleh on the floor, fighting for his life.

"He was lying on his back and he had a couple of his friends with him, trying to stop the flow of blood," said Magor, who added that from where he stood, he could tell Saleh "got it pretty bad."

Saleh, 19, was fatally stabbed in the heart Saturday, when he stepped in to defend a friend during a fight that broke out at the Swallow Lounge on College St. just after 2 a.m., police said.

Magor and Brahmz, of Riviera Regime, had organized the event to release their independent CD Thugz of War and were helping bouncers kick out a few people at the end of the night when the fight broke out.

Magor said people began streaming out of the club and told them that "there was a fight and it was out of control."

He and Brahmz ran upstairs and saw the dying Saleh lying in the arms of his friends on the floor of the deserted club.

"It is pretty sad that people just can't go out and have a good time, and hip-hop artists can't go out and release their album without having to deal with violence," said Magor, who met Saleh for the first time that night but said he knows several of Saleh's friends.

"I feel bad for them that they have to go through this," he said.

"This was a young man that every parent would be proud of," said Detective Sergeant Karl Giedroyc, who said police believe several people were filming the live acts at the club and are asking anyone with footage to come forward.

"He stepped up to the plate to help someone," Giedroyc added, "and now we are asking people to step forward for him."

"I know that hip-hop music gets a bad rap," Magor said, "but this could happen anywhere. It happens in schools and people's houses at parties.

"This was an evening where people were supposed to come together and celebrate," he said. "It is a tragedy that someone lost their life. Be easy, be positive, enjoy your life."

Police are seeking suspects and ask anyone with information to call 416-808-7400 or Crime Stoppers at 416-222-TIPS.

Saleh's friends have created a trust fund for his family.

"He was the man of the house," said friend Brian Vukovic, who said the money will be used for funeral expenses. Any extra will be set aside to help his family.

Does anyone else see the ignorant hypocracy here? I find it sadly amusing that someone releasing a CD entitled, "Thugz of War" is appalled and fundamentally confused why his beloved genre of music is given in his words, "a bad rap" when time and again, events promoting such music end up in violence or worse....tragedy.

This is not about bashing Hip Hop per se, it's about the willful ignorance of promotion of a certain kind of atmosphere, lifestyle and attitude then being agast at the obvious outcome of the actions perpitrated by those who follow and adhere to that mindset.

I am just soooooooo sick of seeing stories and reports of violence, only to further learn that it was associated with a Hip Hop or Rap event. To those producing and supporting positive and creative forms of this genre....I apologize and do not intend to include you in these opinions.

Cheers,

Moss

I think you should probably know what the words to song (or the meaning behind album) before criticizing and calling it ignorant hypocrisy. It could be that they were referring to something else?

so sad about that kid though. its always the person trying to help that gets hurt the most.

I would be VERY interested to see some of the lyrics, but being an independant release, that proves quite difficult.

As for the meaning, do you care to offer a guess on what philisophical paradigm is being represented by the title, "Thugz of War"?

I'd feel safer attending a busy club if they invested in full-sized metal detectors.
