I have to say it sounded like a lot of thought went into A&B's mix. Anyone who's listened to it would appreciate that even if it's not their thing. Jeesh, the amount of negativity on this forum! I like the other DJs too but I'm glad some fresher talent has come through. |
well put. I thought A&B's Essential Mix was nice to say the least! And this is coming from a fan of Zabiela/Sasha&Diggers.... |

I already agreed to this earlier, but here's my reasoning behind it...
For one thing, the track selection was much better than the audience that A&B aimed for (ASOT). In addition, technically his was so much better than A&B's "slap on a record, beat match, fade over, repeat."
It was probably evident that A&B would've won, seeing as how, just like all contests, it's based on popularity, but it's still a damn shame. |

| At the time that mix came out Above and Beyond was not well known to the mainstream. Oceanlab was great from the beginning...(and before that) all the way from being part of "Da Mongaloids" I not saying there were not other great esential mixes, but ever since i first heard it live online i always stayed in my head. |

it's not that this forum is negative...
i'm sure a lot of thought went into a&b's mix
it's just that sasha and digweed's essential mix wasn't just any other mix. it was a step forward in dance music- , the electro sound that sasha dropped set the tone for the whole year!
zabiela's mix was a big step forward too, using effects to take a different approach to dj'ing- what he's been doing for the past couple years. |

| But to be fair...i think Above and Beyond's radio show is weak :p |

ok thats fair enough, but i think the raeson for the negativity, is that listening to a&bs ess mix it didnt really offer anything more than a bog standard 2 hour trance mix...whereas when you listen to zabielas, there is a lot more on display than that. if you listen to the zabiela mix surely you can appreciate that it is a bit special, and is what the ess mix should be all about, not just a 2 hour set |

agreed -- a&b was a solid set with a lot of big tunes but it didn't really go beyond the standard asot-ish level
i thought that zabs, dave clarke, and king unique (in that order) all put together more interesting and thoughtful sets
i have high hopes for jon o'bir next month :) |

I think that the use of effects is all very well, but it's about enjoying what I'm listening to.
Of course I'm not saying Zab isn't talented. Zab & Eddie Haliwell (I'm sure you'll flame me for mentioning them in the same breath, but they are the 2 DJs who spring to mind as people who use FX/scratching etc in this area of music) are impressive technically, but it's not something I'd want to listen to at home.
It's a great performance to see, but the essential mix is different. For me (and clearly a lot of other people) it's a piece of radio to listen to and enjoy, and the vast majority of people are probably going to enjoy the music over the technicalities, which is probably why they voted for A&B.
I also think that there is skill in putting together a great set - it's just a different skill from the use of real-time tricks etc.
I'm suprised people compare A&B's essential mix to ASOT.
I generally find ASOT to be bland - I think there's a big difference between simplistic dutch euro trance and the uk sound that A&B seem to play. It just feels more thought out to me.
