Actually a lot of techno and acid has really good melody and really good basslines. Also a good techno DJ will add some oomph to it by mixing in hip hop or vocals. Look at what carl cox does? Look at his Just Kick remix where he used the vocals of "it just wont do". That is what i call an innovating dj who can mix it up cross genre and keep things interesting.
Look at how James Zabiela will play acid, breaks and prog and still ends up playing "hard"
Mixing it up is what its all about |

Nog, I'm a fan of Acid and Techno, although I haven't heard much of either. For instance my favourite EDM track in the world is Solar Quest - Acid Air Raid... which is either acid or techno or acid-techno or something, I'm not 100% on how to tell the genres apart. As long as there's a melody, a tune, friggen SOMETHING other than "Boom, bumpadump" and someone telling us "We got him!" (Saddam  ) to the beat. Well except tribal, I like tribal, because then "Boom bumpadump" makes sense. Flash Dance is house too, it has a melody, I like it :D. I also love Armand Van Heldan, he's house right? But his music has TUNES. That's the difference to me. It can't just be a drum beat and some weird noises in the back... I need a melody or tune. |

140bpm and above. but it has to have a less uplifting feel and a more techno feel. Thats "hard" in my opinion.

to me, hard is bang-bang. I mostly use the adjective "hard" to describe techno. Very little melodies or even synths, just a linear combination of bassline, percussion and high hats. |

Some tracks I consider hard are Loops & Things (Relooped) and Sander Van Doorn's Loaded. Can you guys name the tracks you consider hard? |

yeah, basically i feel the same way. i burned some chris liebing set for a friend and i was like "omg i have to turn this off, i'm going crazy." if i've been forced to listen to hard music for a long period of time, i literally feel like i cannot concentrate. funny, coming from the girl who used to like uk hard house. ;)
HOWEVER, i do make a huge exception for acid techno. i love it...but there is more of an ass-shaking, funkyness to it, i find. or at least what i've heard of it.
i need more than just bang bang bang. and i can't dance to stuff that's too fast. wandered into the hard house tent at a festival one year and lab 4 was on, and it was just ridiculous. the only thing you can do to that is jump up and down like a jumping bean. so i stood there in fear. |
