What's good for the goose is good for the gander. I think in the name of equality, they should go after why men should have to pay higher insurance rates as well.

VANCOUVER - A Burnaby man is taking his fight to join a women-only fitness club to the B.C. Human Rights Tribunal – alleging gender discrimination.
Gordon Stopps says he received a flyer offering a 10-day free trial at the gym, not far from his home.
"I took the flyer and I drove to Just Ladies Fitness at Metrotown, and I walked in and said I'd like to join up," he says.
Stopps says he he was then ridiculed by gym staff and asked to leave.
Angry with that response, he filed his human rights complaint.
"I have a right to go into any business in North America and be treated equally and not be discriminated against for any particular reason,' he says.
"And people are floating a lot of reasons about why there should be an exemption. But those are just rationalizations."
Just Ladies Fitness has been catering to a strictly female clientele for more than 12 years, and has facilities across the Lower Mainland.
The company says it will not debate Stopps's complaint in the media.
Lawyer Paul Pulver who is watching the case says the Human Rights Code has an "escape clause" for organizations like Just Ladies Fitness – which he says provides a "reasonable justification for the organization to exist."
Stopps say the company has until Jan. 10 to provide a statement of defence or settle the issue. And that if it doesn't do so, a hearing could be set for the new year.

This is ridiculous, why would any self-respecting guy want to join a women's gym?
They are entitled to their own fitness club. Too many stupid guys like this just piss me off. |

| There's lots of gyms out there, for s sakes let the women have a gym to themselves. OK, legally it might be discrimination, but any guy with a little consideration and understanding would not see this as a problem. What is he going to do next, complain that it's not fair he can't use women's washrooms? |

My legal understanding may be flawed, but I'm guessing that the "escape clause" has something to do with private clubs being able to reasonably discriminate. eg. Boy Scouts is for boys ages ___ to ___...so if you're 5 or 45, you can't join in the same capacity. Ditto for sports leagues...if you're 20, you can't play on a peewee team. I know a gym is not exactly the same, so don't jump down my throat, but you get what I mean..."reasonable" discrimination exists in many incarnations.
I'm suggesting that a gym could be classified as NOT being a public business. It could be termed a private club with a membership fee. No one has a "right" to join any private club they wish, correct?
MENSA for example...George Bush would NOT be allowed to join :D
this is just some lame with too much time and money on his hand who needs to find something better to do...what's the goal here? it's CLEARLY not the betterment of society or even bettering any one person's situation. Go feed and shelter the homeless or teach the illiterate how to read. tards like him *really* annoy me :whip: |

It's one thing that he wanted to join the women-only fitness club. But if he was ridiculed, thats different. They need to apologize. They should've told him nice and simply that THE CLUB MEMBERSHIP IS FOR FEMALES ONLY, and kindly asked him to leave.
The funny thing is, I've never heard of male-only fitness clubs
