Your two minutes were for the dead? How is this even possible? A moment of silence, if it is anything at all, is one taken by a single person in order to dedicate time towards self-reflection. You can put whatever labels you want to on it; "Oh, it was for the dead - oh, it was for the loss of life - oh it was for the children" etc... But how is this helping anyone but yourself, really? Is it a moment of prayer? I'd rather not bring religion into it, but it seems as though many people dedicate their pattern interrupt towards an "unselfish" idea that shutting up and thinking about death in a prescribed manner is actually an act of nobility. I fail to see the reasoning behind it, but maybe that is nothing consistently significant between individuals.

It would seem as though a "moment of silence" has been inflated into an ego-trip for those who want to boost their social awareness - not anything more or less petty than that.

some attitudes/views in this thread have been pretty lame thus far, the death toll currently stands at 82,847 - ing unbelievably bad, using the old "Americans in Iraq" crap is getting boring :S

:conf: i've never heard of someone who wouldn't do a 2minute reflection on 100k dead because they thought it was for people with big egos :(

Mate i know what you are saying, but it's comforting to know that other people in the world are thinking of them and their loved ones that have died. You might have to stop thinking so much into things and just easily give 2 minutes to know that it may 'help' someone.

My deepest sympathy for TA users who have lost someone close in this disaster. It's really sad. It touches all of as coz this is world wide catastrophe. Its not only Thailand or Sri Lanka! All over europe having a big losts becouse of that Tsunami.
I live in estonia, yeah well, its small piece of land but hey, even we having big deal of human losts aswell. I even not going to talk about Sweden or Finland! Sadest thing is...that this was in christmas time! All europian turists was there coz of christmas and new years eve.
I must remind you all who talking about that Iraq & American war. This is not good thing to compare war and nature disaster! Those two are very different things. War is what screwy people do...nature disaster is what nature do and i'm sure that nature is not going to ask is this a good thing or bad?! Think about that ppl!

I think that even 10 minutes of silence is not enough. :(
