For some strange reason I found this thought hilarious. Probably because the image of transport planes full of x-boxes and ps-2s going to Southeast Asia briefly popped into mind. |

In the past I would have said yes, but I think it was a shallow viewpoint on the issue.
Death is just death. When you are dead you have no feelings or regrets, no suffering, and no sadness. It is much worse to be the survivor, to see the lifeless body of the person you love so deeply and to be powerless to do anything for them. That pain and that suffering cannot be imagined unless you have experienced it yourself, and it is a fate far worse than death. So I do not think I could ever believe that I would actually be doing someone a favor by dying if they truly cared about me, and if I genuinely loved someone I think that is the very last thing I could ever bring myself to put them through. |
Nice.
There's an easy way out of this paradox. You explain to her the above scenario. Make it clear to her that she should die so as not to suffer the worse fate. She becomes angry that you're suggesting she should die. She stops loving you and suggests you die. You kill yourself (or she kills you). You get to die for the one you love, and she gets to live for the one she hates; you both win :). |
