there is a contest in february that you can enter to win a car if you stop smoking.

i will post the info once i read more about it.

pretty much, you send them a card saying that you are entering. You have to give them a contact to a non-smoking buddy. You do a pee test after a month. And then your name can be drawn to win a ford mustang or some stereo equipment.

i'm going to get ray to try and do this.

It's been 16 days for me and it must have been the hardest 16 days of my life. Remember, a single drag is all it takes to up the cycle. Also note, cravings pass. The best way to stop a craving dead in it's tracks is to tell yourself "I've already gotten this far". Eventually you're not going to be able to avoid smoking triggers completely, you'll just have to learn to get used to not smoking with them around.

There's no better feeling than saying "I don't smoke" when somebody asks you for a butt. And after you tell people you quit, the support is incredible. This thread is a testament to that.

Congratulations.

il remember that.

bottom line is if u REALLY WANNA quit, just remind urself that thats what u wanna do.....
comes down to if YOU, urself, REALLY WANT TO or not.

take it as a challenge: challenge URSELF.
convince urself that u'd be a LOSER to lose this challenge.

worked for me for 9 months.....(then i went to ibiza:whip: )

TheVrk is right, you gotta convince yourself that quitting is what you wanna do. Years of smoking convince you that you like smoking and it's not a big deal, but this is not true.

There's a huge psychological factor to smoking too. Once you're over the physical withdrawal (2 weeks) you gotta deal with the lingering psychological cravings, but those are way easier to deal with when your body doesn't ache for nicotine anymore.

Note. Many girls that don't smoke find guys that smoke a turn off. As a smoker, you're limited to fellow smokers and non smokers that don't care (there aren't many). As a non-smoker, all of your options are open. That's motivation enough!!

Day 6 for me, and i remember reading your post about how the first few days messes with your sleep cycles. That's definately true in my case. Suprisingly though, the cravings haven't been as bad as i thought they would be. Part of it might have to do with the fact that i had quite a nasty cold carry over from NYE when i smoked my last cig, and that ensured that i didn't really feel like puffing during the first 2-3 days when the cravings are supposedly really bad.

Right now, i'm at a stage where i feel the loss of a smoke which is usually brought on by situations rather then the physical triggers. I think at this stage positive reinforcement in the form of saying NO repeatedly in your mind when you think about caving in is important. Also, helping yourself by taking a walk, jog or working out also helps.

I've noticed i'm eating like a gluttonous pig as well (which is an ancillary benefit in my case). Gotta say though, feels good to get through a day, and know i haven't smoked a single ciggerate or puffed a dime of chron ( yeah, i'm giving up both ).

Truth is though, there isn't a magical barrier that you reach like say 2 weeks, or 1 month after which you can say ... "hey, i quit !". I think the second you start to think that way, you become complacent and think, what the hell, i can take a drag and it won't hurt.

If you're serious, you gotta stand resolute and repeat over and over again, i'm not going to take a single puff again...EVER ! Lofty ambitions, i know...but hey, it's a tough battle, and if you don't have the courage to stand strong...you'll eventually fall. Like Karim and TheVrk said, it's a challenge, and quite possibly one of the harder one's that you will face.

To all my fellow soldiers -- keep on fighting -- and kick that butt outta your life ! ;)

EDIT :: Cold Turkey Baby !!! Cause only pussies use the patch ! :p
LOL, actually naw that's wrong...do what you have to to kick the butt...but if you use the patch or any of that other bull imma have to laugh at your ass ! :D

You're not done until it's been at least 12 months smoke free!

Oh man, you're not kidding when you say you turn into a gluttonous pig with food. Wow, I didn't know it was possible to eat so much food. I cleaned out my parents fridge, cupboards and freezer over the break. I looked up why this happens, and some analysts say that it's easy to mistake a cigarette craving for a food craving. Like your body says "gimme SOMETHING" and you give it food instead of toxic chemical smoke. The eating is ed up. It's gonna suck getting back in shape after my eating habits get back to normal, but still WAY worth quitting smoking.

I also read a stat that says that half the people that try to quit smoking end up quitting. More motivation not to be part of the loser half. Also, a study came out saying the sooner you quit, the less the damaging effects linger in the future and almost find a way of repairing itself (never fully unfortunately). Also, people who repeatedly try to quit are more likely to end up smoke free, because their efforts thus far have taught them more about how to handle cravings than they knew when they first started.

Reading threads like this also help motivate you to quit.
