When I'm back home I find it so much easier to stop because I am not surrounded by elements and influences that would make me smoke.
i prob had something to do with that.would you like a fag fran???

to me it doesn't answer the question of why it's hard to stop. just because you do something for a long time doesn't mean you have to do it forever.

I still think that smokers over-complicate things by trying to say it is so hard to quit. Can you tell me why it is hard to quit? I know my words sound harsh. In all honesty, just because you can't get up out of bed a few days in a row, you can't quit smoking? There are people out there that suffer with chronic pain from cancer or whatever else, and a smoker telling me they have a headache for a few weeks makes it unbearable to quit. Or they can't say no to a cigarette because it's too much of a temptation. WEAK WEAK WEAK. Put it into a perspective and it won't be so hard. You need a smoke? Imagine you lived in Sri Lanka right now and all your relatives just died and you haven't eaten in days. Is a smoke that important? Same with any drug.

When a person tells me that they have endured all this stuff to quit smoking, in my head, I'm thinking, "You are an idiot." There are people going through much harder things right now in the world.

Ok, lemme take a crack at this...

First off, you're employing fallacious reasoning when you compare quitting smoking to what happened in sri lanka. No one is saying that quittin ciggerettes is the same as being swept away by a tsumani. There is no question of putting things into perspectivfe, because in reality there is only one perspective...the one you have at the time. What difference does it make to you what hard ships someone half way across the globe is having ? Do you really carry any of their burdens in life ? Do they carry yours ? The answer is No. You have to deal with your own problems, and just because your problem isn't as grave as someone else's doesn't mean it becomes trivial.

Using your logic, i could quickly assume that you are very weak for complaining numerous times about jayx1 posting on this board. I've read in your response at how irriated you get when he posts the same thing over and over again. I could quote it, but i don't really think the board needs to be reminded. My point here is that just as you say, hey, what's the big deal...i can similarly ask, hey, what's the big deal, just look the other way -- i mean, if you can't even read something without getting agitated, how the hell are we supposed to take you seriously when you give advice about quitting smoking. Your temptation to repeatedly lambast jayx1's posting habits is an addiction too, an addiction of looking at this board, and not liking what you see. Some might call it a trivial addiction, some might say it's petty that you should even feel the slightest bit irked when someone voices their opinion and you can't just let it slip. Hell, i've heard jayx1 respond by saying something similar to which you responded something like "well, when i see your name 6 times on the first page i can't look away" ... seems like someone has an issue with controlling her response as well.

Ultimately what i'm saying is that we all have our weaknesses, some more obvious and detrimental then others. I certainly wouldn't consider you weak because you are passionate about how you expect this board to run. By your logic though, i'd have to think you're a pretty weak person if you can't control your emotions when it comes to something that is as trivial as a message board. There are people dieing in Sri Lanka -- are you honestly telling me that you can't overlook the fact that some people like being attention whores ? See how faulty that path of reasoning is ?

There are people going through harder things in life then smoking. No doubt about it. Does that somehow make their accomplishments greater then what other people have done. I'm not so sure. There is simply no scale where you can fairly gauge that sort of thing. Plus...do you honestly want to become the judge of what people have endured ? You don't know what it means to quit smoking, the same way that you have no clue what it means to be hit by a tsumani. You can speculate, but that's about it.

Ha, I would have expected a stronger arguement than this from you. If fact, why don't you look back at at least two months of posts because I haven't responded to a Jayxwho? thread in about that long or longer. You could say that "I quit" responding to stuff that person says because just like smoking, I found it a waste of time even when this person instigates a response from me. But I do not find it a waste of time to try and understand why someone finds it so hard to quit smoking. I can honestly say, I am truly curious as to why a person, in their own words, finds smoking so addictive. I dismiss the physical reasons because withdrawals only last a few days and only include headache, sleepiness, and irritability. If I can learn to ignore 3/4 of the stuff on TA than anyone can quit smoking.

Number 1: Smoking is bad for your health.
Number 2: Smoking wastes your money.
Number 3: Smoking makes you stink and you get laid less because of it.
Number 4: Smoking turns your teeth ugly.
Number 5: Smoking wastes others money.
Number 6: Smoking in iteself looks stupid (burning a fire stick by your face isn't exactly the epitome of cool).
Number 7: Smoking makes you freeze your ass off if you want to do it because no repecting house owner is going to let you smoke in their house.
Number 8: Smoking can make babies be born sick or mentally retarded.

etc. etc. etc.

What about smoking actually keeps you smoking with all the reasons stated above. The people that say, it's so hard and impossible are not thinking straight.

I tried using the example of the tsunami and others suffering to point out to those that are trying to quit that they could be off worse than not having that next drag. Any person in their right mind would not argue the fact that having your entire life swept away and not having a cigarette are on such extremes of the suffering scale that they cannot be compared. This leads me to believe that you are not in your right state of mind since that is the only point that you found to make a comment on. Nowhere did I say I want to become the judge of hardships, a simple statement that anyone can agree with is:

Entire life swept away is much more suffering than not having a smoke that very second.

PS. Graham, I'm very happy that you decided to quit and I hope it lasts past the purchase of the iPod.
