Selling out is what happens the minute you make any amount of money from what you do.

It really doesnt matter if you make millions or hundreds, just the ones who make millions are better sellouts.

So a guy who works the counter at McDonalds is a sellout? He makes an amount of money.

I guess if you want to be like that, when I said "what you do" I was referring to artists, as they are the people who are usually accused of being a sellout.

Oh...did Oliver Lieb sell out? Or was it Juan Atkins? I'm pretty sure those guys are set for life.

Yes, you dont have to agree with what I say, infact I'm sure you would be dissapointed if you ever did agree with something I say.

I don't like the use of the phrase selling out. If someone records some albums, and they get a small fanbase they are not accused of anything, but once the band starts making millions all of those fans start saying "ohhh you sold out after this album" why should a band be accused of selling out if they are successful?

Now alot of people might say no, no, I dont think selling out is being famous, its only when they bla bla bla bla bla. No matter what it all comes down to the same thing.

So I whenever anybody calls someone a sellout I just say that anyone who makes money, from making music is a sellout. The only difference is that some people are more successful at selling out. Of course this is a somewhat stupid thing to say, because you can argue that there are artists that only do what they love, and dont turn down money if it just happens to come their way, but it really doesnt matter. I dont like the way people use the word sellout, because its usually used when an artist changes their style, and it appeals to the masses, and as a result they become very successful. Then the people who liked them before when they were unsuccessful, and playing a different style start going "ohhh you sold out"

No matter what, when someone goes to record an album, I beleive they are doing it to make money. So ing what if you like them when they are small? How do you know in the back of their mind they arent just trying to play what will get them rich, but instead they are just failing at it. Once they finally do succeed in making more people appreciate their music, which as a result gives them more money. You say they sold out? No, they just made a good decision, you were just listening to them while they were still experimenting, and trying to figure out what they need to do to hit that chord in society that makes you accuse them of being sellouts.

There is finally a decent, thinking type topic in the music discussion forum:cool:

In music, selling out is increase of monetary income resulting from the decrease of quality.

It is not possible to make more money by making poorer music. Who is to say that the music is worse? Thats personal opinion.

If anything you could say the more popular the music is the better the quality is, because music is generally made to appeal to people, so the more people it appeals to the better the quality is.

Personal Integrity is bull, if youre an artist making money. If they make the choice to do what you would call selling out, all they are doing is making music that will please the masses. Thats what they are trying to do then, and thats what they are doing, I don't see how that makes them lose their integrity, they are just being a successful artist. You might not like the music, I might not like it, but millions more like it than before, so its probably better, just not my taste.

Success doesn’t necessarily imply one is "selling out". There are many musical artists who have stayed true to their genre.

Yet there is a fine line between selling out and experimentation. The whims of the fans seem almost paradoxical. On the one hand if an artist keeps doing the same thing the fanbase loses interest they feel the artist is doing "more of the same". Yet if an artist dips into a different genre (ex. Say a trance producer starts making house, hip-hop or jazz) the fans cry he/she is "selling out".

Quality is not personal opinion. It is possible for one to detect the worth and value of a given music.

Other than that, the popularity of a track has no direct bearing on its quality. There is high quality popular music and low quality popular music. We're dealing with the definition of "sell out" here, however. And the definition of a sell out is as I stated above.
