Does anyone else have a problem with the Prime Minister going to disaster area?

I say stay home and send the cost of the trip to the poor families and victims that could use that money. We don't need to finance a trip just because you are curious to see the damage yourself Mr Martin.
DONT WASTE OUT TAX MONEY! SEND THE COST OF THIS WASTEFUL TRIP TO THE VICTIMS WHO NEED IT! |

No one else appeared to have a problem with the PM going to Asia, Jay. Just you.
I think it is money well invested, if only for PR reasons. |

hmm.......
Ima disagree on this one....
Yes he should. It was a pre planned trip to India so why the hell not extend that trip to include other areas that are fairly close in proximity. |

| I think he should go to show his support...Tax money gets wasted anyways and if there's anything thats worthy enuff to waste it a lil more on....this is it :) |

Why not use the tens of thousands of dollars spent ferrying him around on clean water, emergency shelter and food for victims?
I dont get it. A better PR stunt would be cancelling the trip and giving an extra 20 or 30 thousand dollars to the relief effort. |

Christ Jay ! One minute you are talking about the respect that the Argentinians are giving to the people who perished in the club fires by having the national day of mourning and then you question why the leader of your country is going to an area which has been devasted by one of the worst natural disasters of our time. This is either a very silly rhetorical question, or you're just blind to the obvious.
The reason beside it being good PR, is to show respect, and honestly, what's wrong with him going as a symbol of Canadians who are working hard to get funds sent to the people over there. The money it costs for his trip is literally a drop in the bucket, so saying that it could be better spent is simply ridiculous. They don't need $20,000. They need $20 million.
Is it absolutely essential that he goes. No, it isn't. Is it good for the profile of Canada as one of the countries which is actively trying to help. Absolutely ! |

no issue whatsoever...if there were more visits like these, there would be more goodwill between countries. Symbolic gestures go a long way...why do you think Bush, Powell, etc. would visit the troops...moral, symbolic gesture of support, etc. Did he DO anything? no. I think you'd be hard pressed to say that his visits were "a waste".
money is not the issue with relief...there will be plenty of that as it's needed...it's delivering it to the people. |

I can see the headlines now:
CANADIAN PM CANCELS TRIP, IN FAVOR OF A MINISCULE $20k ADDITIONAL RELIEF
John Stewart Style Commentary: Recently, Canadian PM Paul Martin chickened out of trip to the tsunami disaster-area, citing concerns of 100-foot tall WAVES. He was quoted as saying, "Waves have aftershocks too, right? I'd rather just pay the $20,000 and be safe" |

I can see your point if Canada weren't donating anything, but we are, and the money spent on the trip pales in comparison to the cash Canada is contributing to this cause.
Sending the PM there is a non-monetary way of showing our country's concern, care and support. |
