Lucas, you definitely got it right. The middleman needs cut. A notion that some artists both embrace and fret. Why? Distributors can do wonders for an exploding artist and channel them to the right places, but at the same time Distributors also hold back(and limit) newcomers just to accomodate a market and keep control.
Seems like when you cut the middleman, wildfire breaks loose like mp3s as everyoneone can grab them with ease in internet piracy. Hence sandsstorms comments about diluting a market. Too bad it's not the way it's going. Sorry Sand. |

No pressing costs.
unlimited amounts of people can buy the track also... from your DJ, to your every 15 yr old kid who just wants the single.
So maybe from selling 1000 records, you will get 10,000 downloads.
Who knows, im up for them both.
:D |
a 15 year old kid will not buy mp3s lol. Mommy can u buy this for me, no just download it hunny |

| Personally I think it may be the future, but not completely. I think vinyl & cd(r) will still be around. I don't mind downloading legally from labels. My only concern is that the audio may be in poor quality. I'd want all the music to be available in lossless audio codecs that are widely supported and burnable. |

for something to compair it to, What would you say if microsoft made windows only available for download, for $100 a pop, You could only install it on 1 computer. If you computer goes, you loose it, and are forced to get it again. And if you wanted updates, you would have to pay for them also.
If I am going to buy a track online, it better include the cubase file, synth files, and vst's as well, then id concider it. |

Well, if you bought a 320kbs mp3 online... chances are you would of burnt it onto a cd-r. Therefore you have a reserved copy, or better yet, back all your mp3's on dvd cds.
Im telling you, distributors only want to push known artists, it's very hard to break into the industry. You can have your track on every dj's playlsit and still not get a release, but you may be able to sell it on a few webshops and get a few thousand downloads.
The great thing about webshops is that also, the label makes more money and therefore the artist does too.
You will just have to know how to promote your label well online, but as we all know, great tracks will always make their way on dj's playlists and get known after a while.
djhilo has it right. My mate is signed to a major dutch distributor.(2yr contract) and for some reason everything they send now, the top man, won't press it nor release it. They want to have total control.
And I'm sorry to say, I may not be a top gun industry professional, but I have ears and when I go into a record store, 80$ of the stuff i listen to is very poor.
It seems to be who you know, not what your music is.
Just my views.
Oh the bit I love is, when you become a superstar, everyone starts sucking your c**k.
Personally, I'd start my own distribution company If I lived in Europe. I'd do it part time @ nights. Start with major chain stores & online and selling to other major distributors. Then within months, stores will get a hold of you.
The reason a few have gone bust, is because of bad money managnment. Also P&D deals.. which are rarely given out anymore, due to releases not selling as well and then distributors being left out in the cold.
Err im going on.
Ciao :D |

i personally dont like the concept of buying mp3s. the only benefit i can think of is that vinyl prices may drop.
MAY DROP.
then again, they may raise because tracks that 10,000 have DLed will only be pressed on 1,000 copies.. who knows. damn i want to go 7 years back in time when trance was trance, it was good and it was on vinyl

lol what? if the talent was good they would be signed end of story... |
Really???? Most of the top-notch authors of music and books took years to be signed, and normally then only by people who were willing to take a financial risk on them.

There isn't any money in vinyl anyway for the artists - only the middle men vultures.
