Digital Record Labels; The future of the industry? (pg. 3)

well why stop at distributors? why not cut out the label as well and have the artist make all the profit?
labels are useless except for advertising...
oh but wait...now we're talking blasphemy...
i think that by going into the mp3 downloading era...once people realize that "...i can do this without your help"...labels are just gonna end up killing themselves or lose their larger sellers to self-promotion.
i mean lets face it...all i have to do is make some badass tracks that every hot dj is playing...make a little site...and have the mp3 to download for money. you're ing yourselves labels...don't come crying to us when you don't have any power left in the industry... |

i think labels also have a bigger legal advantage though. I doubt a single person could do much against illegal downloading. Copywrite laws would have to change. |

Great discussion here guys but another few questions:
Currently the market leaders are edmdigital.com and beatport.
Is there anything that you guys would like to see offered that isn't being offered yet?
What would you improve upon if you had a site?
What would the next market leading site offer that the current ones don't?
I think they offer just about everything a dj needs! I don't see a digital site getting any better.

Seany_G - this is a discussion. This is not a forum where we give you business ideas & tips. There is heaps you can do to improve and we are currently working on a new store which has many features.
But like a record store, or GOOGLE, It's all about luck and which name is more catchy and who has more selection.
Floorfilla, seriously you should consider thinking before you type.
There is many reason's, why you need labels.
Mainly because most label's would still dish out 12", 12" will never die. theremore more promo, also the fact of WEB HOSTING AND WEB SPACE can cost a fair bit.
Promoting one site for one single, will be majorly hard and people also need to be able to find the site.
When you have certain artists on your webshops, your gaining way more exposure. therefore people won't only download 1 track, theyll look around and maybe download 4-5 every few weeks. THEREFORE GAINING MORE SALES FOR EVERY ARTIST.
Oh what else, WEB DESIGN, PHP/SQL can cost a fair bit from a web designer, even if it's only one track. It's not as easy as you think.
I think it's a great thing, but at the same time, artists need 12" releases because it gives them CREDIT.... and it's cool to have your track on WAX as well as the digital way.
Anyway thats my crappy say again!!

Man wheres the fun in that?? Half the satisfaction of buying records is digging through a whole stack just to find some unknown gems!! Especially at decent second hand stores!! |

Yeh, I agree.
But I got into dj'ing, before the huge trance boom. So I pretty much have every trance record I want.
Early 90's stuff, is mainly more PROG ... even tho I found a BEDROCK classic for $25, worth over $100. I know a guy in Melbourne, Australia who flies to Europe once a year and buys records. He's a collector and he always has anything Im looking for and he's cheap.

that's very true
but on the other hand, those major sites - beatport, edmdigital, or any other that can get as popular as those - can very well become a huge record label themselves in some time. there's no need for more than 1 intermediary in the digital world i believe. |
