New Pioneer CDJ-200 and DJM-1000 (pg. 3)

Confirmed by Pioneer (effects MP3's only):

(problem with Beatport downloaded MP3's skipping/jumping on the 5th beat of play - only when manually que'ing up tracks) described as:

quote:
I load all my tracks in Autocue so that I do not have to worry about finding the first beat.

I play the track at 130 bpms and it sounds fine
I press cue to go back to start position
I press play and ......

The track jumps ever so slightly between the 5th and the 6th Beat / bar.

Response from DJ_Pulse @ Pioneer:

MP3 files consist of frame units. Frame size is determined by the sampling frequency and the bit rate - 144 x (bitrate / sampling frequency).

If the sampling frequency is 32kHz or 48kHz, the frame size is completely divided. However, if the sampling frequency is 44.1kHz, because of decimal point, additional data needs to be inserted between appropriated interval to be able to divide averaged size. This is called "budding" or "padding".

This budding process is needed for MP3 encoding of 44.1kHz sampling data to fit MP3 format.

What's happened with the LAME 3.95 and 3.93 versions of the encoder is there was most likely a math "drop" (the decimals rounded off) and the file was encoded without the budding.

This means that the file ends up with some missed data, interpreted as a VBR file. While the CDJ200 can play the file just fine, if the frame information is required (such as creating a new cue point), the budding is required - but not supported (VBR).

While this is not an error with the CDJ200 but rather the encoder, Pioneer is looking into ways of resolving this issue with a software update. I don't have a timeframe on the release of the update but it will be announced here and your information will be available as SOON as we have it - so don't ask.

Sorry about this guys - hopefully you can work around it for the time being.

I think we should send some emails to Beatport might convince them to upgrade their encoders to avoid this problem in the future.

(Pioneer is going ot issue an update to the CDJ-200 software) The update (when it comes) will be a downloadble CD image which you burn and then load into the player after you power it up with a button-sequence, putting it in update mode. After it updates, it spits out the CD and you're ready to rock.

As I said, we have no timeline on the update but it will be available as soon as they tell us about it.

-------

To summarize:

- Beatport encodes MP3s using a version of LAME that is not the most recent/up to date.
- CDJ-200 supports the most recent LAME encoder.
- As a result of different encoders being used, there is a slight incompatability which "only occurs right at the top of the track - about 5 beats in - and only if you are cueing manually".
- Pioneer to release a software update shortly.
