Why is it people associate all electronic music with techno and not trance?

When ever anyone hears trance they call it techno, since when has techno been the stereotypical electronic music?

Well, most people called the apparent genre-starters, Kraftwerk, techno, the name just stuck.

Yeah yeah, May, Atkins, Saunderson and all that, but people don't know who they are.

Since 2-Unlimited kicked out "techno techno techno" most likely. In the UK, you don't hear "techno" much any more, and people associate it with that kind of late 80s cheesy synth crap. Most people who don't know anything about EDM just call it dance, or if it sounds pretty heavy, they call it rave.

Because the emmergence of subgeneres is, histroically speaking, relatively recent and popular culture has not updated it's rolodex since it was all techno.
