Computer problems

Ok lately ive realised that it takes a bit too long to load up Windows XP, if i turn the computer off. I mean whenever i want to use it i turn it on and i have to wait at least 5 minutes to get to the proper windows screen, and not only that, all the drivers and software dont seem to work for example sound ssaying Bad Sound Drivers or something, or even pictures cant be opened.. So i have to restart the Windows once or twice, and hope for the best. My computer is Pentium 4 3.0 GHZ with Hyper Threading and 1 Gig of RAM, so i'm guessings its software based rather than hardware based.

Anyone know what i can do? Because i remember about a month ago, as soon as i pressed on, this computer would load in less than 30 seconds to the proper windows screen.

Thanks everyone
MERLIN
maybe you got a virus? there's always a clean install...
igottaknow
easiest solution is to reinstall windows

Hmm but i don't want to go through the hassle of backing everything up and formatting for a clean install, i want to try anything now to fix this problem, its very stressful. Theres at least more than 80 gigs of data :o

If it is a virus, could i just say "upgrade installation"? or will the virus still stay there?

and I've ran Zone Labs Anti Virus, hasn't picked any viruses up, Norton Anti Virus 2005 couldn't either, so im pretty much stuck here.

the os should reside on a partition or drive by itself that way your data won't be affected by a reinstall.

sure reinstall is a pain but its guaranteed to work. when your frustration reaches critical mass then you'll bite the bullet.

one other thing remember to back up outlook mail and contacts and ie bookmarks.

Nah i don't, to be honest. I don't even trust that program at all. Also i put Internet Security on my computer and was doing that to give my computer protection.. But it seemed like it screwed up faster than without it :o

Anyways i have to figure out what i did to cause this, no clue yet :o

maybe you got a whole lotta hidden starting up during the os start up causing it to take a whole lotta time for you to do anything.

but igottaknow is right on the money with the clean install. i've been though it many a time, when i just said it it's time for a clean install. if you do a clean install, after you get everything running without flaw, make an image with norton ghost. that way if you ever crash again, you could just use the image to get it back to pristine condition without the whole process of a clean install, or so i've heard.

just do:

run > msconfig

and uncheck what you don't want to start up, easy as that!

works .. but yet it goes wayyyyyyy beyond that .. they biggest is how many progs you have on your computer .. how many progs you HAD on your computer .. if you installed a prog with some installer package, then you deleted it by just deleting the folder, the libraries and class files are still hanging around the registry .. you have to remember your registry .. if your registry is huge, might as well reinstall windows ...
