i don't think i've ever used the term before ..

if people ask me what i like i say trance, progressive, and drum & bass, etc..

and then sometimes they're like "oooooooooh.. what's that??" "is that like techno/house music??"

and then i say no.. and then all of a sudden they get all intrigued :tongue2 :thepirate

Well, since it seems to be the "dance" part that's getting everybody up in arms because it reminds them of Euro, all we need to do is eliminate the D.

I propose EBM - Electronic Bugger Music

I would also accept Nn-tzz-nn-tzz-nn-tzz-nn-tzz Music, but only if it's properly beat-boxed.

if you don't like that, then what are you going to say about this: IDM :wtf:  :eyespop:
at least EDM >IDM
or is it?!?

^^^^^^^^^^ So true...when I say I listen to dance music, that's exactly what people think of automatically! Like Z103.5 . (<-Even tho I still listen to that station on occasion..:o )

I don't get why all you nu skool ppl love to use the term EMD, you guys all sound like a bunch of EC ppl. (Electric Circus) IMO, the term EDM is pretty corny & chessey, just call it Electronic Muzuk.

This has been annoying me for awhile now. It honestly, sounds like some TOP 40 clubber term.

I concur!

My friend produces IDM...he'd prolly say it's quite fitting.

If you ever say "EDM" while talking with someone then you're probably a n00b. But to say that the term has no place is not right. Most of these terms were created by magazines because they needed specific words to describe music, and as such EDM is quite fitting.

I'm sorry, but "Dance Music" doesn't mean electronic dance music. Dance music means everything from salsa to the Tango and Waltz. Dance music is far too generic to be used in a broad circle without people question what exactly you are talking about.

I prefere Electronica myself (although this too is probably not the right term).

Ultimately who gives a ...

Stop being so anal you whores and jus learn to live with it ! :p

INTZ INTZ INTZ <---- my favorite way to describe all this 'techno' music ! :haha:

IDM is also an actual genre, not an umbrella term like EDM. And it has other names, like Drill 'n' Bass or Broken Beats. It's *supposed* to sound technical and geeky because that's essentially what the music is all about (which doesn't mean I don't love it, don't get me wrong - Squarepusher and Autechre are pure genius).

Although I'd like to see someone who can actually dance to IDM... I think it's probably easier to dance to gabber.

and I think that is pretty cheesy too.

dance music? as in music to which you dance? is there some music to which you don't actually dance then (aside from an exception or two like classical)?

I think the term is good b/c it's desscriptive.

EDM is played in clubs, where as the broader term 'electronic music or electrinica the latter I dislike the most b/c it has the least descriptive qualitied, it basically means electronic in plural)

electronic music does NOT necessarily mean music that you would hear at a club/rave etc, electronic music can be completely experimental undanceable music, and therefore, the tem EDM has a purpose in terms of distinguishing between a genre of music that you woudl dance to and hear at a club vs music that is something completely different, that has a different purpose. I think b/c we listen to EDM when we hear 'electronic music' as a term we immediately jump to think of trance, DnB etc..

anyway.. my 2 cents.

+1

see this girl knows what shes talking about!

there IS a genre called EBM - ever heard of VNVnation? or Apoptygma Bezerk? or anything like that?
That's Electro-body music aka EBM.
