Me and my Pioneer DJM 500...

Well I had the unfortunate experience of having a mate of mine be a little careless with his friend the Captain and Coke... needless to say the final score of the match was:

Captain and Coke: 1
Pioneer DJM 500: 0

For those of you who missed the subtlety in that I'll be blunt: When you pour a liquid such as a rum & coke into a running DJM 500, it dies, or at least mine died.

This happened in the middle of a gig, and as a quick laugh to those of you out there who know what I went through, the replacement they came up with for me was a Behringer DJX 700... if you've ever used one you already understand why that's hilarious.

In any event, the next day I naturally went into panic mode, looking for another DJM500 right away, disregarding all the "Blah blah blah New technology rules blah blah blah DJM's are old and suck blah blah blah" that seems to occur. Found a used one in what I deemed great shape for around $400 (Incl. Shipping), bought it, it will be here hopefully Monday/Tuesday.

Now here comes my dilemma, while I am glad to have found another DJM 500 for what I felt was a decent cost, am I really losing out by not "upgrading"?

I am really very comfortable with the 500, I can use the effects within a very comfortable level, I use the EQ's to mix and have yet to play on something I considered MORE sensitive (At least within my price range). I guess what I'm saying is that even if I'm really very comfortable/happy with my skills and the DJM, is it inevitable that I'm going to have to find something new?

I'm considering spending what I consider to be a good amount of money on a *NEW* generation mixer ($1000-1500) before I leave for grad school overseas, as I'm considering DJ'ing as a possible means to make extra money. If I were to lay down this kind of loot, is there anything you all think is giong to be the next industry "standard"? Or should I stick with what I know?

Interested to hear what people think. Anti-DJM comments welcome ;)

Cheers,

RJT (A very happy DJM user)

you should have had a third poll option which reads 'well what do you think, should i...

3) punch and kick my friend into a mushy pulp for being a careless fool?

he should really pay for a replacement to be honest. that seems to be the fairest option. or at least contribute some money towards getting you a replacement for being slack next to your expensive gear. if i directly fooked up some of my friend's DJ equipment i would pay to get it repaired or replaced. seeing as im skint id probably have to sell something or at least defer for a while until i can accrue the money. but i would pay it back. maybe not straight away but id like to think inside of 3 months. just honour amongst friends really. and tell your buddy to be fecking careful not to drink or smoke next to dj equipment in future! likewise my friends take care not to drink or smoke next to my studio gear (although i watch them like a HAWK when the spliff starts to waver over my virus b).

explain to your mate in these terms: would you drink alcohol next to a baby in a pram? what if you spilt it all over my kid and knocked him the out with your glass? dont drink near my kids!

Can't vote either. I loved my DJM-600 untill I sold it and I still love mixing on DJM mixers at clubs. It was time to move on for me, but it all depends on what factors are important to you.

if you're comfortable with it, then it, you made a good choice. I had DJM600 and liked it a lot more than some of those cool new mixers that everyone yaps about.

Random Extra Fact:

All $400 for the new DJM came from my buddy, not to mention a significant quantity of the finest green that mother earth has to offer.

This more than made up for it for me. This is one of my oldest friends, so I definitely did not even think for one moment he would try to scam me, I knew he'd take responsibility.

I came out of it good, for the moment, and while I am pretty anal retentive already about people having liquids near my stuff, I guess it just goes to show that if you take your eyes off your equipment for one second (Well, maybe more like 15, but hey I needed to find a record!), can happen.

Just thought I'd stick up for my mate a bit, he is, after all, not a bad fellow :-)

Cheers,

RJT

ok your mate is a gooooood mate.

add a 4th option to the poll saying 'should i...'

4) pat my mate on the back for paying up, giving me some quality smoke and generally being an allround fab human being? come spill some ale on my djm tommorow! we can scam the insurance companies and go out and get a xone 92 and a holiday to the carribean with tha moneh!

i think if you are comfortable with what you are using then stick with it. it was only a freak accident that parted company between you and your 500 in the first place anyway. whilst you may have bought a mixer with a better feature set with the money its best not to think about that cuz you've already bought a replacement 500. if you keep thinking about it, it will just eat you up inside! i wouldnt dwell on what you 'might' have got with the money. but rather focus more on how you can improve with the tools you already have. its overall a more productive frame of mind to be in. and after all, its not the tools which make the worksman good. its how the worksman uses the tools he has thats the important bit. my 2 pence.

Well being comfortable with a mixer is more important than a mixer that can look cool and do some things you might use in the future, so I say your fine going with another DJM, they are good mixers, yes you can get better for the same money (when buying new) but thats the way technology is.

Thanks for all the insight guys...

One question yet: Has anyone found what could emerge as the new "standard" mixer for clubs?

Thanks all, Cheers,

RJT (Patiently waiting for his new DJM 500...)
