The Alt F4 chords are derivative of the supersaw chords Above and Beyond uses in their productions from 2001-2003. Don't get me started with Whiteroom and the sines... they aren't the first people to use sines in trance music, not even Markus Schulz, nor PPK... so that clearly was uncalled for. People aren't going to be at a club analyzing a track whether a melody came from here or there. If the melodies are used right and they sound good, that's what people are concerned with. I'm keeping the melodies to Floating regardless of where you say they come from. The only way I would change any melody to my tune is if a melody doesn't sound smooth in the track or an actual composer comes to me with a lawsuit, but that will unlikely never happen since their melodies were probably from another trance track altered someway to fit their style as well. Musicians are like sponges and they pick up everything they hear. You can hear their influences in their music. Oh well this isn't a discussion on proving where each major producer got all their melodies from, so let's stick to the topic.

What I'm concerned with is if the track has potential that could be better or something sounds bad. That's what I look for in criticism. I pretty much block out that useless crap like "it sounds too much like bla bla bla here"

No need to get on your high horse mate! When I mentioned the White Room sound I did mean it in a nice way! I think saying "change the melody" was constructive enough don't you?

Sorry for getting anal about it... It's that sometimes I see criticisms... of tracks (not necesarily mine all the time)... that an artist put a good effort into them, but all they seem to bash them is on how a little melody sounds too much like such and such artist rather than stating what they thought about the actual track.

like for example Aura - Breathing Silence.... very class uplifting trance track, but on Beatmaka they couldn't get passed the fact that they had used a similar acid line to Oceanlab - Satellite

What's wrong with Alt F4???
The only thing is that when the long break reaches its final part at approximately 4:00 the track begins to gain speed and power but when the lead finally starts at 4:11 we expect something more massive. I'm not sure how to explain this (my English is not so good unfortunately) but when the lead starts it should really detonate. More energy in the lead, but personally I would leave all the rest untouched.

Nothing is wrong with ALT=F4, just that if you want to produce a track then produce a melody that isn't a clone of another!

You may have your opinion and I have mine. yes the melody was inspired by Alt F4 but it isn't a clone... hell it is not even a main melody... it's simply rhythmic chords to balance out the track... kinda like how the oldskool rave tracks have similar piano chords to balance out the elements in the tracks... I'm gonna close this argument about the Alt F4 style lead. I find no point in arguing over it.

Sure I said the track was great? You shouldn't get down when ppl say it sounds like this that and the other - you should take it has a compliment! I am a producer to so I can appreciate the hard work that goes into a track! I never put samples up because like what you said happens ppl slate it! I haven't got time for that! I know what sounds good and what doesn't! My second pair of ears, Icone tells me whats wrong! I reckon he is a gooder judge than any! Remember it's nothing personal!

The melody in Floating is certainly not a clone of Alt F4. Alt F4 might have been a source of inspiration but that's all.

I will check Nullistic - Don't Let Go and Bad Colour

Nah you're reading this wrong! When I said clone I was regarding your quote 'many pro tracks are derivative of predecessors'! Not meaning your melody! Think you and I are on different wavelengths this evening!

I don't mind posting stuff here... A lot of times I ignore comments that I think are harmful or unneeded. I guess it depends on the mood I'm in whether I feel like challenging it or not, but mostly I don't bother (I'd rather defend bad criticism on other people's tracks than on my own). I can decipher the criticism I think is helpful and what I think is unnecesary. Hell, a lot of times people prove me wrong because as objective as I think I am, since it's my own music I can become very subjective (and that goes with any composer/producer/whatever). Usually I'll take the criticism, when a good majority of people end up saying the same things. That's when I know it may be wise to take that advice.

I try to have objective ears as well while making a track, but when I post here sometimes I get criticism I would have never found anywhere else. People hear stuff differently. Scully (aka Solange) is my second pair of ears, but I don't get the whole story just from his point of view. That's why I like to post clips and tracks here and share my music for free (yeah a lot of labels hate me for that hehe :))

I really love the way you introduce the lead in Bad Color but I'm not sure it would fit with Floating as it's really not the same style. By the way I also checked again Seashells which you say is a chillout track like Floating and I think the transition from break to lead is better in Seashells. In Seashells when the lead starts at approximately 3.47 everything is fuller and it has more punch.

cool yeah? :)... I'll use that as a reference then... thanks for your input.

This is great Gerry!

One of the best songs I've heard on TA, the melody before the breakdown - with that AVB/above and beyond synth is cool, I want to know how to make that synth :)

Excellent, soulfull stuff :)
gerrycueto
that's just saw plucks any subtractive synth can do that... a free VSTi that can do most trance sounds is SuperWave P8... check it out :)

all you need is one oscilator of saw.... and envolope filter cutoff envolopes to decay the cutoff on every note... so it sounds like a pluck.
