Is the Internet just the Internet?

Many people on here say that the forums are just the internet and rules don't apply here. I beg to differ since I think we have evolved into a new type of community of people hanging out.
Seriously, it would be the same sort of thing as in the old days people would go to their local bar and hang out, but now it's done on the forums.
Which leads to the point, should you never watch what you post because it is just the internet and no one cares, or should you act like you would in any other place of people meeting.
I want to hear all difference views on this. |

| i don't think it's fake... you should be held accountable for your words/actions no matter where you are voicing yourself. it's not like people who post here aren't people. |

I think you over-deify social convention.
There are never any set rules of accordance towards human behaviour - the observations you make are merely based on prediction due to either your own inhibitions or others as well as the consequence for the violation of societal mandate. People are free at all times, and make choices with regards to the incentives offered in a given system - as such, people act how they want to because they believe that this choice in behaviour offers them something to gain - very rarely (if ever) would someone do something if they consciously believed that they would ultimately lose something in doing it.
With that in mind, the internet is a society to some and is absolute chaos to others - depending on perception and action. This is not much different from the world that you type in in that regard, but the internet offers limited punishment for the excitation of uninhibited people. Though, there is still societal punishment - if you act like a moron in the forums, people will know that you are a moron - simple as that. That is all the punishment we can offer. So you do what you like on the internet; it is my personal belief that you cannot impose regulations here outside of personal consideration and choice, but you rally for whatever rules you think are necessary - the rest of us morons will continue doing whatever the we like because, frankly, we outnumber you. :p

Much of what needed to be said has been said here. :D
Of course, people are responsible for what they say but if someone says something potentially offensive there is little point in actually taking offence to it, as you will never meet that person face to face. All you can do is ignore that person and others with any sense will notice it and ignore also. |

There is no reason to take offense but there is no reason for people to say stuff on purpose just because it is the internet and not real life. |

If the Middle East has taught us anything, it's that even the smallest group of people are the ones who ruin it for everyone else.
And falafels. Can't forget those falafels.

| I think the internet is just the internet and we all have lives outside of it. But the things you say can be quite hurting to someone who doesn't feel that way like that guy who OD'd on IRC on his webcame with people egging him on and . |
