there is a dual-carriageway urban road here that links gateshead to sunderland which is a 30 or 40 i cant remember with loads of speed cameras up it and on teh traffic lights.
bout a month ago me + turner coming back from sunderland, some absolute no-brain pulls up level with me at the traffic lights. speed camera sign actaully attached the the lights and a camera on the lights with another camera obviously up ahead in the central reservation. we pull away slowly on green and this cunt goes off on one during amber, dunno if he got done by the lights cam, but he was about 100 yards ahead of us by the speed camera going a good 10mph over hte limit, me + turner saw it flash twice and couldn't stop laughing.
needless to say the guy realised and slowed down to about 20mph with an absolutely sick look on his face when we went past him near the tyne bridge

A couple of months ago the council decided to make the road outside my house into three lanes, with a dual carriageway on one side. Although there have been complaints, the council claim that it has actually made traffic slower than before. Of course, this then begs the question: what the hell was the point? :rolleyes:
My Dad now has to sit in the outside lane with cars speeding towards him as he waits to turn into our driveway. I'm worried that it will only take one careless idiot to try and speed around something and slam into the back of his car. :wtf: Scary. |

Sometimes traffic cops are right wankers, like a friend of mine got pulled on Christmas eve for doing 32mph in a 30! The policeman approched him and started going ape saying "You have no clue about driving!". The he asked what my friends job was...Hes a tank driver for the Army :p
My Cousin was rushing from Worcester down to Cheltenham to pick up his wife as her dad had cancer and looked like he only had a couple of hours left. He got pulled in his Audi TT Quattro for doing 120mph on the motorway, he explined to the policeman bout why he was going so fast and the policeman said "Right...i'll give you a police escort out of the county and put on the radio for all other cars not to stop you...im not telling you tht you have to stick to the speedlimit, but dont go too far past 110mph"....What a top bloke :) |

That's quite obviously wrong as you are allowed a 10% error in your speedometer. |

Yeah the Police will not even bother to pull you for doing 32mph in a 30.
They have had to have some other reason to want to pull you over thou.
but a conviction for 32mph in a 30 mph zone will never happen.
no speedo is 100% accurate so they have to give a 10% variance and then they add another 2 on to make sure
so its always 10% +2
20mph zone you have to be over 24mph or over to be pulled / flashed
30mph zone you have to doing 35mph or over
40mph zone and its 46mph or over
50mph zone and its 57mph or over
60mph zone will be 68mph
70mph on a motorway will be 79mph althou i have driven past marked police cars on the motorway doing 85mph but if they was being right bastards they could have pulled me over and prosecuted me.
Speed cameras fixed and mobile are also set up the same way, 10%+2
i have been thru a 40mph fixed camera at 45mph and not got flashed but to be on the safe side stick to the limits thru camera's.
Mobile camera's are not that reliable and are hand held, they should be calibrated daily but often are not, when pulled or sent thru the fixed penalty notice from a mobile unit, contest it and ask to see the calibration certificate for the speed gun, if it was not calibrated on the day you was caught, you have every chance of getting off the conviction.
There are rules on placement of speed camera's mobile and fixed.
it is the law that all camera's should be highly visable including the mobile ones that are on the side of the road in vans.
The warning signs have to be a certain distance away from the camera, mobile units often flout this regulation, they show the sign but it's often right next to thier van.
The van itself should have markings on it althou again thanks to a loophole, the van is often white with one sticker on its side in very small letters saying Safety Camera Unit.
They should only be used at accident blackspots but most are set up miles from any blackspot and are set up on an area of road thats usually perfectly safe to go above the indicated speed limit.
They are imo a get rich quick scheme for local councils / police / government and cause more accidents than they are meant to prevent.

i agree that you should contest it all the time, but i feel that if you do and get found guilty still, the penalty would be much higher.
i reckon i would have got a ban if i had have contested mine |

I still remember the sick look on his face, what a fool it was sign posted 40mph everywhere and cameras everywhere, yet he decides to exceed the speed limit by about 10mph. :haha: :haha: |

If a court believes you are doing it just to waste time then yeah they prolly would give you a harsher sentence.
If you can provide resonable doubt then you will get off.
in my case when i got caught doing over 110 mph on the m1 i pleaded not guilty to that charge but pleaded guilty to a lesser speed.
They was happy they still got a conviction and i was happy cos i got 4 points instead of a ban.
if you get caught on a mobile camera, you can ask for the claibration certificate before you go as far as the court process, if the camera is lacking certifcation go for the court case, if it was calibrated 5 minutes before you got caught, don't bother, take the fixed penalty cos you would have no chance at all in prooving any doubt on the camera.
Fixed camera's don't need calibration, so don't bother contesting those one's, just mobile camera's and getting a tug from the police.
if there is 2 policemen in the car that pulls you, you have less chance of getting away with it cos it 2 V 1, but a single copper in the car, you have more chance of winning your case as long as you can proove some reasonable doubt.
Like i said in a previous post, i told the court it was impossible to be doing the speed i was reported to be doing due to bad traffic conditions but told them it was possible i was over the limit at maybe 85mph when overtaking and pleaded guilty to that.

In reply to Turner, yes, because even if there are no speed limit signs, the presence of street lighting indiccates a 30mph limit.

10 Step Guide What to do if you are pulled by the police.

As requested.
1. Stop safely and try and get out and meet them at their car. I like to knock on their window and ask them politely “Could you step out of your vehicle please constable”. It disarms them if you are so quick off the point and can fluster inexperienced plod. Remember confidence is everything. Don’t appear frightened, just respectful and confident.
2. Be polite. They are just doing a job. If you act like a nob you are just going to wind them up.
3. Take notes. (Leave a note pad and pen in your car.)
4. Record what they say. Note particulars like where they were parked, where they saw you, names, numbers, constabulary name, station name, distance covered, location of stop, irregularities in signs or road markings etc…
5. Eat humble pie without admitting any guilt.
6. Non-committal answers only. (eg. Do you know were speeding? I wasn't aware that I had contravened any speed limits. Practice answering with a question – What speed you were doing? Err Why, are you going to tell me?)
7. Don't produce any documents at all, other than a bank card to show your identity. (Even if you do have them). Accept a producer and designate a police station somewhere convenient for you. If you show a licence with points marked on it they are less likely to let you off. Additionally, you can check your documents at home and make sure they are in order. (eg. Names address, MOT in date etc.) If your MOT is out of date just get a new one immediately. Present the new one and state you don’t have the old one and can’t remember where it was done so you can’t get a reprint. CPS won’t prosecute you – waste of time if you have a valid MOT)
8. If they are reasonable and let you off that’s great. If not check their vehicle for visible defects. Tyres, number plates, lights (if on), visible damage, road tax etc… You can do this discretely or blatantly.
9. If they offer you a summons or ticket choose the ticket. You can still go to court on a ticket if you want to fight it. If they fill in a ticket check it thoroughly, don’t point out mistakes. Normally you are asked if you want to make a statement. Make no statement or simply deny the allegation. (Eg: I deny the allegation and believe the constables have made a mistake) They will probably be annoyed but just point out it’s not personal and apologise if they are offended).
10. Upon returning to your car sort your self out. Don’t set off in a rush. Sort your seat belt and set off safely. If you haven’t finished making notes pull up safely as soon as possible and record any other factors that you think might be important. Some people are also shaken up by the experience. Have a coffee and chill out for a while if you are. See legal advice or email me. You have admitted nothing and have a right to defend yourself in court. |
