Why does some pro soccer fan always have to come into every sport thread that isn't soccer related and feel to need to say that they hate it. The question relates to if basketball is only for tall freaks, not if you like basketball or not.
Basketball is not a game for freaks to get back on topic. When it was started (during the all white man days) rarely where their super tall people who played the game. Remember back when people never used to dunk the ball? I think now you just have super athletes, people are getting taller with each generation and you have to factor in the black athlete who on average are taller and can jump higher than their white counterparts. Also factor in that many of the players that get the fame tend to be powerforwards and centers like Duncan, Shaq, Ming, etc when most of the guards and shootnig guards are only 6' - 6' 5" tall which really isn't that tall. The average male height is 5' 9". The whole point of the center is to be a "tall freak" as that is what the job of the center does. You wouldn't recruit a 6' tall guy to be a center as their job is to be the middle man, the blocker, etc. It is nothing more than any other job description in life. You wouldn't hire a plumber if you were looking for an accountant.
Also look at overseas teams which are generally smaller and quicker or in high school and college where everyone isn't superhuman heights. I think globally basketball is for anyone, sure professionals have to be bigger, stronger, and more athletic but that is the same with any sport or else everyone would be a professional. |

oh...ok, I see your logic here. So the location of an invention is more important than the brains behind it? Interesting. |

The average offensive lineman in the NFL is 6'7", 325 pounds. That's more freakish than 6'8" 195 pounds (a fairly average forward on an NBA team), in my opinion.
Height is an advantage in almost every sport. Pitchers in Major League baseball have an advantage when they're towering over the batter's box since they can angle the ball to more effectively clip the bottom of the strike zone. Isn't Randy Johnson 7'? |

then why didn't somebody think of it before? I don't even like basketball but when you invent a sport that is played around the world (though let's not kid ourselves, most people outside the USA couldn't give a e), you deserve some credit.
Unlike most other big sports (proper football, baseball, hockey), basketball has a single man responsible for its birth. |
