purchasing audio equipment- need recommendations

i have been put in charge of buying an audio system for a house and i was looking for some recommendations. i have about $1500 to work with, and theyre looking for 2 or 4 speakers (2 on stands, perhaps 2 subs), an amp, mixer and all cables.. there arent any real specifics, but heres some info:
-need stands for speakers
-room is about 50ft x 100ft, but its split in half, dancing on half, chillin on the other half
-the mixer can be pretty basic, with 2-4 inputs, pretty minimal stuff that is good quality
-it will mostly be hip-hop/house being played, normal mainstream style..
-it needs to be powerful but durable, because there will be alot of dance parties thrown
-looking to spend up to $800 on speakers, the rest on amp/mixer/stands/cables
any help would be great, really appreciate it.

if your room is 50' x 100' you will need WAY more then that to ever be able to play at normal listening volumes.
you need pro level stuff and it has to be very powerful because of the room size.
you may be able to find someone selling stuff used...a mobile who went out of business, etc...but thats still going to be tight with that budget.
try the local paper, craigslist (if your in the US), and finally e-bay. |

| yup, your gonna need alot more doe than 1500,, for a room that size, you will need 1500 just for a couple good speakers. |

That may have enough balls for a room that size without people, but when people are dancing expect their bodies to absorb most of the sound... If you can mount it on a truss in the celing, that may help too. |

bottom line: unless you get uber-lucky, $1500 isnt going to cut it.
I went thru $1500 just to get a good set of subs and mid-high cabs (tops n bottoms, as we sound dorks like to say) -- then that all over again for my amp rack with crossover, line mixer, compressor/limer and EQ.
given its all fairly high-end gear for its class, none of it is new and all of it was obtained cheap for what it is.
sound stuff gets _expensive_ -- in the long run, your better off buying high quality used gear than low-end new stuff.
sure, the new stuff may have a warranty, but a warranty does NOT help you at 3am when your left main amp goes puke. i find newer stuff breaks more anyhow (especially amplifiers, which were meant to be simply beefy devices, recent amplifiers remind me of recent cars.. plenty of tin n plastic)
and... for the money you save on used gear, having a spare isnt that big of a deal.. and that sort of warranty does work at 3am sunday morning when you are almost too f'cked up to remember which connections are which. |

Im gonna keep this simple.
Just an amplifier to power a room like that will cost +/-$1500. |

| Re-read his original post. He said the room is going to be cut in half. One part for chillin, the other part for dancing. I own the B-52 matrix 1000. Its a sub and two speakers. Like I said before in here a couple times, I have beat the hell outta them, and they still sound damn good. You could even check out the matrix 2000. Its got more wattage than the 1000 and I don't think it costs that much more. |

Thats 800 wattz of power for 349.99 at best buy. I dont know what you guys are buying but just for a simple at home dj booth 1500 bucks is outrageous!! Its a at home dj setup not a club.
