It all depends what you are used to and like to use. I started out with only software and learned a little bit but it pissed me off.
Now i have a virus C and 8080 and have learned how to program synths alot easier than software. REcording from hardware is not a difficult process like some ppl make it out to be. If you like the sound of a virus then buy one a "B" is pretty cheap now, and for me twisting knobs helps my creativity somehow. I agree tho its all in the melodies but if you have that right sound sometimes its easier to make a melody. |

This is exactly how i was thinking.
I can use soft synths but when creating sounds and that i'd much rather mess with knobs (the type on synths that you turn, not what ur thinking ;) ) that clicking a mouse dragging things around. Let the creativity out in you!
8080 now thats another beast of a machine that i want. Good old Ebay! |

i would recommend a nord lead 2 rack or jp8080 - both are alot easier to program than the virus (probably because they have less modulation options). i found the virus somewhat...confusing when i first got it. i still find some aspects of it confusing.
one thing about the virus you should know - its not like absynth. you cant really fiddle and not think about what you are doing - well you can but it'll sound .
thing is. the virus has alot of parameters which affects the action of another parameter. for example. the second filter determines the action of the first filter (the extent to which is determined by the filter balance rotary) which is controlled to some degree by the filter envelope (extent of which is controlled by the env amount rotary). then each filter can be modulated by the second LFO. broadly speaking. if you set up the filter in a certain way, then go back and start changing things you can really change the sound radically and get lost on all the mod parameters. when i first got it, most of my patches degenerated into bassy, distorted sludge.
you have to think about what you are doing to some extent on most synths (hence why i think absynth is such a work of unconscious genius!). but with the virus you have to think somewhat more than usual. and you have to think a little further ahead that something you change now will affect something else later and you kind of need to be able to anticipate this change. at first its a mind . you get used to it. but not before getting pissed off and disillusioned with the whole process ;) if you are used to programming zeta then you should fit into the virus way of programming fairly well. i found zeta somewhat mind boggling. nord lead 2x was crazily easy to program. and the FM is fun fun fun. i still want a nord lead 2 pretty badly but owing to this weird desirable quality of my virus b and despite the fact it pisses me off! i will *never* sell it. unless i get such a good price for it (over 600 quid) that ill never be able to sell for that much ever again. even then, id probably regret it afterwards.
funny that. the weird thing is, i hardly use it for the purposes of writing songs. i mostly do sound designing on it. trying to fit the virus in with my softy only projects is difficult - in floops it plays back with a delay that is related to my ASIO buffer length. additionally, above 30% CPU load it starts to play back somewhat drunkenly. above 60% it becomes difficult to monitor. above 80% it hurts my ears cuz its triggering notes in completely the wrong order and for the wrong length of time. i think this is a problem with my ASIO drivers and my host (fl studio 5.0 and m-audio delta 1010. floops doesnt have latency compensation either. it says it does but it doesnt. if you use cubase though you'll be laughing). it makes using the virus in projects, at least for me, very difficult. also, rerecording and making minute adjustments to the sound all the time gets tiring. |

I already have a Nord Lead 2(don't use it much these days), and my very first synth was a Waldorf Q KB...so I think that I'm pretty well verced in synth programing. I'm not to interested in the JP8080 sound and I hate supersaws now. Synth wise I thik I'm satisfied with all the ones I have and I really don;t think I need anymore(yeah right!!), but seriously I think that if I were to ever have anymore cash laying around I would jump on a Virus B...but I'm thinking that my next purchase will probably be a moogerfooger...that will probably be the end of it for now. |

| i was kind of recommending the nord and jp to dj twenty. but it seems you already have a big slice of virtual analogue. its probably time for you to widen your sonic palette a bit. maybe go for a digital piano (alesis qs 8?) or a hybrid workstation synth like an alesis fusion. maybe an analogue monosynth like an sh-101 or pro-one. or think about modular synths like nord modular g2 etc. theres so much more to synthesis than just virtual analogue. heck you could try out some sample playback synths. isnt the yamaha motif one of those? i think it gets pretty favourable reviews... |

I'm going to be ordering a virus classic model early next month, can't wait!
Nord Lead and JP8080 both look like nice machines and you can never get enough of supersaw's! :D Both defo next on my purchase list.
Bit of topic but anyone ever had experience of the Supernova I / II ?
They are going quite cheap on ebay. |

I've got a Micorwave XT for my wavetable cravings and a MAM mb33 for my true analog beast munchies...also a yamaha TX81z for that FM sweetness...i guess I'll just throw in the rest. Next in the kit is a yamaha CS1x for that XG type stuff(mostely used for a controller KB..but still used for sound design here and there) I also have a Novation K-Station kicking around and a Novation D-Station...i'm pretty happy with my setup..its pretty diverse and each synth brings its own flavor to the table. |

Right bit of a dilema, ive been offered a Access Virus A for about £250. Im tempted instead of shelling out £650 for a new classic.
What was the differences between virus a/b and c ? |
