And why my friends should be getting paid more? Well they are not really my friends just a few people I know. They've invested thousands and thousands of dollars into their education, they are considered highly educated professionals....so you do the math...for them it's now more worth it to go drive a bus instead. |
i see your point, but education can only bring you so far
the rest is all about work ethic and dedication........alot of the drivers have been driving the same route for years and have had to work there way up im sure
plus i doubt the newb drivers start @ the much
plus im not saying that your nerd freinds ;) dont deserve it
i just dont like the fact your saying bus drivers dont deserve a little more to live off
plus next time your drunken ass is taking transit home think about the driver who got you there |

exactly...and i'm not saying that TTC is BAD i'm jsut saying that it shouldn't be this way! People graduating with a Bachelor of Science can't find jobs. New immigrants with PhDs and Doctors can't work in Canada so they drive cabs...meanwhile these guys are crying over a 2% increase in wages difference. Something's not right here... |
it's not the fault of the bus drivers that these people pick careers that have less opportunity to find work. there is a lot more room in the job market for bus drivers than there is for a PhD in Science.
as for surgeons that come from Uzbekistan or some other hole, that is a different issue. |

You guys have to realize that this is just a stupid game played out by our union & TTC management...Even Moscoe said that today...I kinda doubt that we will walk and hope we don't :nervous: .If there is a strike, the government would legislate us back to work like last time...
As a licensed "Coach Technician" for the TTC, the drivers outnumber the us (non drivers) by 4 to 1 and so even if our group didn't want to strike & the drivers do, then "we" have no choice.Thats why alot of my other mechanic friends wished we had our own seperate union. |
would it be just bus drivers striking???
dont they all make differnt money being the most 1)train drivers 2)street car 3)bus drivers |

Well I imagine that since they're part of the same union that they would all have to strike together. But who ends up making the final decision? Is there a vote or do the union execs make the call?

I challenge you to find a public transit system anywhere in the world that has its operations self-financed through fares alone. |
Well, who says we can't be the first? :p
Seriously though, considering how the TTC is managed (poorly, just think of sheppard subway line..) it shouldn't be hard to increase the operational efficiency of the TTC. That coupled with a modest fare hike 25-50 cents and a reduction in unecessary expenditures should do the trick. The problem is that since the TTC is run by the government, it is prone to the cumbersomeness of parliament. If the TTC were privatized it would be much easier to implement the above measures and set the TTC on to a path of self-sufficiency. |

There is a "wage group" structure in the non-unionized part of the TTC.It starts at wage group 1 (janitors,etc...) all the way up to wage group 13 (lead hand mechanics>they look after a shift if theirs no foreperson)..I'm a wage group 12 and the drivers are wage group 10 ( I'm not sure about that but its like a 50 to 75cent/hour difference)...
In any case we are ALL lumped into the same union.... ATU Local 113 |

| Another fare hike? They just raised it 25 cents. You dont use the TTC daily do you? It's already too expensive as it is. Why should i spend $100 a month for it to take twice the amount of time or more to get somewhere when for another $80 a month i can own or lease a car of my own? |

What happened is that the TTC put forth an offer...The union execs showed it to us and all the unionized TTC employees voted on it yesterday by secret ballot. Its basically a formality & politiking from the union & TTC & a huge waste of time. Now its back to the table & more negotiating. |

If you lease a car, you have to also pay for insurance and gas (the price of which has skyrocketed as of late.. it's around $53/barrel of crude right now). |
