| AHHH! i just got back from the doctor and i definitely have strep throat, and the doc said there is a small chance it could be MONO!! WTF!? :whip: :whip: :whip: i am healthy 51 weeks out of the year, and the one freaking week before miami i get strep throat. ughhhhhhhh |

Just some info for all of you:
The overwhelming majority of throat infections are due to the "common cold", which is viral in nature. As such the only treatment is symptomatic. Fluids, acetaminophen (tylenol), decongestants, antigargling etc... No antibiotics or other treatments have proven effective in treatment, though taking zinc at the very first signs may help reduce time of infection.
Strep throat is a bacterial infection. The most common symptoms are fever, sore throat, pain on swallowing, malaise and some swollen lymph nodes. Most of the time there is a lack of cough, which distinguishes it from the common cold. Treatment is supportive and with antibiotics which is really a preventive measure for complications because antibiotics, in trials, have reduced symptoms only minimally, despite widely held misconceptions.
Infectious mononucleosis ("mono") which is viral in nature presents with symptoms of fever, sore throat, and malaise and myalgia (muscle pain). People usually have swollen lymph nodes which is characteristic. The vast majority (greater than 90% I believe) recover spontaneously without any treatment. Supportive measures like acetaminophen are all that is necessary, used for symptomatic relief.
Usually fever symptoms subside after a week to two weeks and if you have symptoms like lymph nodes and splenomegaly (enlarged spleen) symptoms may last longer.
