Yup... thats what citylife is all about. Streetcars and people who are awake all night.
There are none of those in the suburbs/countryside ;) |

When I worked for the Bamboo Cabana down on Queens Quay, We got alot of noise complaints, most of which came from the Radisson next door. The amusing part of this was each night it happened was the same promoters. Crazy bastards would turn the stage monitors out to the dance floor, making the total something like 140dB SPL. If I hadn't had custom earplugs I probably would've got some pretty serious hearing damage.
Anyways, the smokers tended to leave the patio doors propped open. The result, the Radisson would get rocked by the sounds of overdriven calypsoca, and the patio door faces the lake. I wouldn't be surprised if the Bamboo was partly responsible for alot of the noise that the islanders are hearing.
Wouldn't that be interesting if I was right... |

There's a difference between regular background city noise (that is a fact of life in a big city) and a super club hosting outdoor events late into the night.
Answer...INDOOR events. WTF is so problematic about that? A club can't put on an outdoor event in the club district past a certain hour...why should the Docks be allowed to do so?
The Docks' operators have acknowledged this themselves by not hosting any similar outdoor events. From what I've read, they are just concerned about their liquor license not being affected (and I fully support them there).

Most of those idiots dont actually live on the island. They use them as cheap summer homes as per my understanding. |
maybe, so what? The two people I know of who have homes there use them as their primary year-round residence. What difference does it make?
People here are siding with the Docks because they are music fans. If you lived in the core and a club/bar/whatever was hosting an outdoor event late into the night that you did not enjoy, you'd be on the phone to the police in a heartbeat. Same here.
I'm not saying the island residents don't whine a bit too much...but to suggest they suck it up is insensitive and supporting illegal behaviour by event organizers. People have the right to not be disturbed by unecessary noise after a certain hour. The Docks does not have the right to host outdoor events whose noise impacts homeowners.
So stop telling the homeowners to suck it up. Go complain to the powers that be who allowed residences to be there...and to those who drafted our noise bylaws...and to the event organizers who chose to disregard them and host an event within audible range of residences.
you're energies are being misdirected at people who LEGALLY have a right to live where they do and who deserve EQUAL REPRESENTATION UNDER THE LAW along with everyone else in our city. |

Interesting you mention what you think id do. You see i live over a pub that i never go to. They are rocking the beats from thurs to sun till 3 am. I hear the thump of the music in my floor not to mention the drunk idiots out side. Its not a big deal because im used to it now. But i knew when i moved here that there was a pub downstairs and that life happened in this neighbourhood. I have never complained and never will. Why? Because thats what i get for moving over a pub. ANd really its not that big of a deal.
If more people had my attitude it would solve a lot of problems. You want peace and quiet? Move to peace and quiet. You want a city and all its conveniences? The don't expect life to suddenly stop happening just because it's your bedtime. Its very simple.
If the pub bothered me that much id move away but i happen to enjoy living in an area where all the things i need are within a 2 min walk. |

that's your choice to tolerate it.
the island residents are allowed to choose NOT to tolerate it.
(I didn't mean "you" as an individual...I mean the average person, in general...poor choice of words on my part).
all I'm saying is that instead of bitching about the residents enforcing their rights...bitch at the people responsible for them having those rights if you feel they shouldn't have them.
I just don't see why this is soooo different from any other noise bylaw violation case in the city. |

they and whiners like that have only recently allowed to choose this. There was a time not too long ago where my reply to them would have been the normal answer. For example, Trains have been around for hundreds of years yet all of a sudden in the last 10 years the horns are suddenly an annoyance and people want horns banned on trains. Same thinking with this island fiasco or anyone who complains about city noise.
So what has changed here? The train horns or the people who hear them? |

trains...streetcars...those are part of our city's infrastructure.
An outdoor party that could easily be held indoors is not quite the same thing. |

but my point is that people now bitch about them equally. Nightclubs and parties and concerts are also part of city living. What about those idiots near the christie pitts who had concerts banned in the park? These were happen at 4 in the afternoon for god sake!!! |

Just to put the picture straight
the event in question was ozzfest , it was a daytime event and
WAS OVER BY 11PM
many of the complaints have been on nights when the docks has been closed |

i rest my case... these island whiners are pathetic |

I realize it was not a Docks event in question...but they apparently are still responsible for what occurs on their property, no?
I don't agree with daytime events in parks being banned...and if Docks is meeting the noise bylaw at night, then I think they should be allowed to operate too.
do I think everyone has a right to utter, complete silence in the city? no. There is normal, acceptable noise from "the city", including traffic, streetcars, etc. If you live on Queen St. in the core, it's rarely going to be as "quiet" as a side street. We can't silence a streetcar and traffic...but we *can* expect a club to properly insulate a building to minimize noise and respect existing bylaws, for example. |

| but you have to agree that the level of complaints and the sensitivity of the complainants is out of control. |
