Well, I don't know if setting it in the USA in the 1890s would fit the book either. The whole point of the book was an attack against imperialism, an allegory to what Wells saw as Europeans (and other countries) doing to less advanced peoples of the world. Since Britain was the easily the world's most powerful nation until after WW1 and the USA was barely even a middle power, it wouldn't make sense. Britain, in all her glory and power, were quite useless against the Martians...the conquerors were being conquered in brutal ways.

I guess that's why Hollywood just won't make a true version of WOTW. In their view, a movie about Victorian Brits fighting aliens with no Americans around saving the day won't sell in the USA. I beg to differ, especially with someone like Spielberg behind the lens. Everything has to be Americanised and it bugs the out of me.

There is another War Of The Worlds movie coming out by Pendragon Pictures, That version will be an authentic adaption of the book, Check out the official site for it here, But I like what Spielberg is doing in his version, If they were to make the movie set in that era, People will not buy it. Setting it in the modern world makes a lot more sense since the USA a powerful country to this day, So having this story takes place in our time, We can all relate to, But also keep in mind, This story is being told from a family's point of view. I just saw the latest Q&A video on the yahoo movie site for War Of The Worlds, Spielberg said that this movie will be the refugee experience, Much like how all the european countries experience it in WW2, The americans never experience being refugees, Cause in this movie, They are being invaded full on.

The one thing I REALLY hope they do it put a respectible part of the film to whats happening in other countries. I hate it when a film just concentrates on America, and doesnt mention whats happening in the rest of the world.

Umm, I don't think so, From what I know so far, The movie is told from a family's point of view, Where seeing all these horrific events thru there eyes.

Agreed.

I do not think that in this modern day anyone would beleive martians live on mars. That is lame. & also, who is going to be sucked into a movie that was not set in modern day? You can't rewrite history!

I am thinking that Speilberg will actually have aliens come in from another galaxy & set up a tempary observatory on Mars to watch the humans & plot their attack. ;) that makes much more sense!!

My only gripe is that I wouldnt have minded it being set in Europe & eventually be taken into London. Seeing London distroyed by the martians would be awesome.

If the Aliens are as vastly superior to us as they look to be portrayed in the movie, who's to say they weren't on Mars the whole time?

The problem with Hollywood is that they too often think unoriginally. Hey, here's a great book that has been loved for 100 years! It would make a fantastic movie but we have to bring it up to standards first and make sure we get our sponsors in it...you know, Coke wasn't around in 1895 England. Anyway, all recent movies about alien invasions have been set in modern day. How many times can we go over and over this concept? Even the 1953 WOTW movie version was modernised and used the A Bomb (a silly scene if you ask me).

Is it too much to think that people wouldn't be intrigued by a movie by Steven Spielberg about aliens invading Earth 100 years ago? I actually think it would do quite well...throw in some British thespian actors and a few Americans speaking in accents with big effects and Stevie behind the camera...sounds like a hit to me. I guess I'm just a purist since this is one of my favourite books and because I'm an historian so Victorian society is much more interesting to me than modern day American pop culture.

By the way...I think I read somewhere that the aliens come from a different dimension, which is why they're "already here". I'm sure it will be a good movie, but I'll have to check out the Pendragon edition, as cheap as it looks.

I hate people that complain about movies not being the same as books/comics

It'll be cool to see it "ADAPTED" to a screenplay

it's called respect for the source material. Why change something that's already established and loved by generations of people?

It's quite obvious you've never read the book (or probably any books for that matter)

Stupid assumption.

I've ready plenty of books.. and seen them be twisted in to horrible adaptions.

I've gotten over the whole "omg they're gunna it up" syndrome and just accepted that one of these things is likely to happen

a. Its going to be great and they will fillow it to the T. (Which sometimes makes for a bad movie)

b. Will change a few things around so it will fit in the normal 2 1/2 hour time slot

c. Everything has changed and they're just doing it to get numbers

Books weren't always meant to be movies, and sometimes its just better to read and use your imagination.

Will Spielberg pull through and actually deliver with the cast and his producation abilities? *shrugs* Dunno, but I'll find out when I see it.

Bitch about it all you want, but its already made.
