*SHAMEFULLY RIPPED OFF (with permission) FROM ANOTHER FORUM*
My buddy works for the Canadian Auto Press, and posted this on another forum we frequent.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Benz wants to one-up BMW in the diesel race, and has done so by means of adding three turbochargers into a V6 common-rail diesel engine.
Anyhow, it has two twin 'baby' turbos for quick spooling time. They're mounted ... well, in normal positions.
Once the revs go up, the third turbo - a melon-sized turbo - located in between the banks of the cylinders, nestled in the 'V' instantly kicks in, and whoomp.
The result: Guilt-free, and lag-free performance. As the title says, 286 hp, 434 lb-ft of torque, and hits 100 km/h in 5.3 s. Also does 7.5 L/100 km; 31 mpg.
It was all put into an SLK 55 AMG body. It's pretty hot, I think.

I love diesel engines. Especially common-rail designs. Quiet, efficient, doesn't stink. I also love the idea of performance diesel vehicles.

unfortunatly in a time where gas is a luxury, auto makers seem to be putting more and more power into their cars. and to what end?
I can understand this type of car for Germany, but anywhere in North America is just stupid.
Thats great, nearly 500lbs of torque in a 3000lbs car...can anybody say wheel spin?
and the 0-100 mark isnt very impressive. A 911(normal) will do that, and its only has a flat 6.
sorry about the negativity, its just that automakers are really not putting any effort into their cars anymore. We need to be concentrating on small engine cars, about 2L for the north american market. We dont need more than 200bhp for our 100km/h highways. |

I'm sure it has some swanky differential + wheel spin control systems.

Maybe you don't, but I do. I want to go from 0 to 100 as fast as possible. |

So Germans need wheel spin but North Americans don't? It's a known fact, DIESEL engines are high torque engines.

Um, the Porsche isn't diesel and only gets about 22-25mpg (that's the non-turbo, the turbo is worse).

So you think our 100km/h only need max 200hp. Why do you decide that, if you're looking for practical, 200hp is overkill, you don't need 120hp on our 100km/h either.
Maybe you missed the fact that this car gets 31mpg and has 286HP. My 200HP 2.0L 4 cyclinder also gets 31mpg. What's so negative about the above Benz? |

What ever happened to speed = bad gas milage?? :whip:
My Trans Am gets 10mpg on a good day :D
Excellent idea though! Gotta give alot of credit to Benz on this one. |

ok so i did totally overlook the deseil part, oopppsss:D
but still, my point about over-powered cars, and under-powered highways still stands!
btw - are the EU mpg tests the same as NA tests? |
