Can anyone tell me a little about this? What are the different ways of getting into it? What is the best way to get into it? Any other advice/comments/concerns?
Thanks. |

| hammer out as many resumes as you can to every contractor in sight....if you're seriousely interested in making it your career your gonna want to get indentured (registered) as an apprentice as soon as you can other wise you'll be a labourer the rest of your life. I've been an electrician for about 6 years now, never been outta work and make good cash.....if you wanna be in the union....thats a whole different animal and theres only a couple ways to get in. If your looking for summer work or full time, i can ask around the sites for ya....but i'd definately go with being a sparky if i was you....lots more opportunity. |

| thats true. hbut with the push the government is giving. and how much money theyre putting into ad coampaigns to push kids to get in trades how long do u think till all those spots are gonna be full? people like highroller eveyday are thinking abt getting into trades now. our jobs arent as secure as we think. once the start flooding in, its up to our union to make sure our jobs are secure. and im scared our unions only care abttheir pockets and not their workers |

I had a LOT of fun being a butcher.
I also really, really liked hot rodding my mustang over the few years I had it (at the same time I was a butcher).
Not that I don't like what I do now - I do. I guess I'd say my current employment is a hobby of mine as well.
Whether it was cutting meat, hot rodding my car or doing what I do now - none of it actually feels/felt like work. It's hard to explain. |

i am currently boarding/tapeing/plastering houses. i was luckey cause my father is a drywall taper, i asked him to teach me and he brought me along.
i have been doing it for a year and a half and i like it so far, mainley cause the money is great. but make no mistake man, taping or any other trade isnt "easy" work at all. if you slack, you dont make money.
right now the average age of a skilled trademan is over 50, so in a few years theres gonna be a huge demand for trades. i dont think i could tape for 25+ years, so i look at taping as a back up plan if my other career doesnt work out :( .
pros: great money. espicially if you get alot of private jobs through contractors. you can be your own boss(for the most part.) you can show up to work at 6am or noon, it doesnt matter:D, just as long as you get the job done.
cons: trades are hard work, if your not fast you wont make money. your not always guarenteed work. this is why its smart to have connections with contractor builders for work during slow times.
THIS IS CANADA, IT GETS COLD!!! if you plan on doing an outdoor trade, plan to freeze youe ass off.
concerns: my father has shoulder and elbow problems from doing the same types of movements for over 25 years. so like any physical labour, expect some kind of health related problems later in your career.
trades arent for everyone, so make sure you pick one you like.
my advice is to go to a construction site and find someone to teach you a trade.(my bud did this, cause he didnt have any money for trade school.)
good luck ;) |
