I tried following that tutorial before, but failed to create anything useful. I should give it a try a few more times I guess - it took me several attempts spread out over 3 months to figure out how to configure and use Logic before I became proficient with it, so I'm sure it's just a matter of time before I get this right. Maybe not, I'll never know unless I try...

This last post by Emperor clears things up a bit. So at what point in the sample should I look for the highest point of the waveform: wherever it's the loudest or wherever the mid frequencies lie?
Also, what would you recommend to use as sources? Just standard 909/808 kicks?

Thanks!

remidi dont worry you will soon get it ;)

im at work right now so i can not help with any images.maybe when i get home ...but..do this...

open up a 808 kick (basically all low end with no upper presence) in Wavelab or any editor. As you play or scrub the sound it goes from left to right. With most sounds if you look at the attack (the time it takes for the sound to get to its highest volume)of the sound it never usually is at full attack. Most of the time it takes a few milliseconds to reach full volume. Sometimes the person who originally recorded the sound did not do a good job and even left a small bit of silence before the sound starts. This is where i would fix and add a click ( if i wanted it)Zoom in real far and cut out the silence....Maybe you might even want to cut out the part of the kick until it reaches full volume(up to you).so cut that out...but dont do it with snap to zero on .Make sure snap to zero is OFF and make it so that your cut ends where the wav (zoomed very close in) is at full volume....not where it crosses the zero crossing.....

the more i talk the more i probably confuse things.i will upload some pictures later .Im new to this forum so im not sure how to do that. Music is my thing hehe....but i will try.good luck

you can get free imagine hosting from imageshack or youanddie. basically you upload the picture there. they send you back a url - the web address. and you post it here using img tags.

seriously - thanks for clearing some of this stuff up. i was beginning to think - whoa am i doing this totally wrong?
DJREMIDI
I will definitely give this a try when I get home.
Designing various synth patches, composing melodies and mixing I can do quite well [at least I think so] - designing kicks from scratch is just not something I can do :(

I have already read several interviews with a lot of pro producers using drums (kick, snare, you name it) from old vinyls (very classic example: Moby) and from samples CDs (Soulstice used Mega Drums on ASR-10). This is a public knowledge, everybody knows that! All you need is a good TR909 set samples and process it through a lot of plug-ins in order to get a decent kick for your track.

About Sirocco drums set:
I really love those samples, the processing used on them. If I don't use my drums from Supernova2, Microwave XT or MKS-80, I use them. Very very professional.

AK.

I'm not saying it doesn't happen, I threw that southern sun example out at dance123 because he was being a tard ;)

It's not like they create even 50% of their kicks; but, as you say, they really process them. It sounded to me like dance123 wants to get those samples and load them up in his little redrum and have insta-banging-kick. Not happening :)

i searched the forum and found a few threads started by Sirocco, and all the links to the kick packs/Airwave kick were dead or down. Would someone be so kind as to link me elsewhere? or mail them to me? Would be most appreciated.

Hi,

First of all, I have checked the "Where to find quality samples" thread, but after visiting most of the sites I still haven't found the kind of quality kick samples that artists like Kyau vs Albert, Above & Beyond.......

for a start, the kicks that they use are nothing special.

P.S

lately i've found that if you persist and dont give up and piss-fart around enough you'll get there in the end. so mess around with some average kicks in cool-edit or soundforge or whatever you use

I cant believe im about to tell you this but...

try:

-Overlaying a little click sound to give it some res
-Using a still flange to make it sound powerful
-doing a little EQ'ing to give it a good bass frequency and remove the one.

just keep trying

I cant say exactly what your after, but if its a crappy old punchy kick like the "Above & Beyond" kicks then Fruityloops has its own kick generator that can make that exact type of kick.

I'm sorry dude, I understood other thing... It was my mistake
:whip: on me:eek: shame on me...

I was only curious as to why some people liked them so much. I have no problem making my own kicks for the record.

I could upload those kicks, but only with Sirocco's permission. Contact him and ask him if it's OK; if it is, ask him to drop me a line or post in this thread and I'll host those samples.

Tech0rz

Tech0rz
