Sadness, anger... a turmoil of confused emotions carried by anxiety. The emotive feeling from trance and the violence from jungle with a psychedelic twist. | Marcus Lira - The Grudge

After a couple of years since I last posted anything here (refer to this thread), here's something I was working on just before I had a major software breakdown in my beloved compy, in early 2004.
Unlike my previous track, this is not an epic tune. Not only because I was often running out of system resources after trying to sync so many synths playing a 64-bar melody, but because I felt this was already being done at the time by artists such as Ill.Skills, Paul B. and the infamous John B. The trancestep they were producing seemed rather melodic, and it felt like it lacked the harder edge drum'n'bass could provide.
If I were to describe it, I'd call it a full-on psychedelic trancestep tune. Faster than your average trance tune (by mere 30 bmp :p), and closer to trance than most trancestep I've heard so far, I'm trying to simply push trance music to a different ground. The richness of layers found in psychedelic trance, with different melodies appearing from time to time as if it were a mosaic, the rolling aggressive bassline from the darker side of drum'n'bass added on top of the fast paced drum loops typical of the genre that, despite of the speed, are pleasant to dance to. Along with that, a bit of 303.
Feedback is really appreciated. If you know of similar tunes, please name them. I hope you enjoy the tune.
p.s.: I've never seen "Ju-On: The Grudge", by the way, so the tune is not related to the film in any sense other than the common dark atmosphere (although I don't expect my tune to be as scary :D).

The song
I like the quick breaks - and the furious pads are nice too. Melody is dark and really deep - i love your bassline....although the volume of the percs mayube needs to be up a bit.
Very cool track, something different. |

listening now dude, my first impression is that it would make a decent hard house tune :p
in fact the synths and melody sound a lot like some Tony De Vit stuff.
really liking the melodies as well, you've definately got the creativity side of producing well under control, it's just the mastering again thats the problem
but if I was to hear this in a club, I'd rave my ing off, so good job :D |

Thank you.
Yeah, I reckon I've got to work on that really, but I often find myself on the horns of a dilemma - whenever I up the drum, the synths seem to disappear, and vice-versa. But I guess I'm close to solving this problem.
And i've registered to that service already, I believe I will receive the confirmation tomorrow :)

wow, crazy stuff. i like it.
i'm not sure if this is supposed to have an audible kick/bassdrum or not, but if it does.. where is it? turn up the volume on that! the bassline is mint but the kick+bass pair must be tweaked so we could feel it..
other than that, awesome! very creative |

Indeed, I'm re-building the tune in the next couple of weeks and work on the drums a bit more. I've got to find a way to let the bass, the drums and the synths co-exist in harmony :/

Interesting song, but how we dance listening to it? Just joking...
Try to put some compression on bass, because it's hard do distinguish the basses notes...
Cheers! |

I don't quite understand what you mean - the bass is just a continuous flow (i.e. once the first note is released, it just glides to other notes). So you shouldn't hear the "bass notes" other than the changes done by portamento... or I didn't get what you mean?
Valeu por tudo :)

Yeah, the first arpeggio does seem to be loud in some sound systems, I'm gonna work on that as well. Cheers ;) |

| If you want to glide the bass notes then it's OK! |

Hey dude,
This track is really friggin' tight! I'd definitely say this is a good mix between hard trance and DnB. I wouldn't quite call it "trance" though just because it doesn't have that uplifting emotional bit, and there's no euphoric breakdown (or breakdown at all, it seems), but it does have tons of energy with some good musicality to it ;)
Everyone already mentioned mastering, but... What I'd do is turn down the high synths to give more room for the low end. The mid is definitely lacking (1 KHz range) so you might want to work on some EQ. Usually dropping the highs and bass is better than boosting the mids. Might want to pass through a tube warmer or HQ multi-band compressor to help bring out that bass end again. Just be sure to watch a spectrum analyzer while it plays to make sure you're not overpowering any particular band.
Musically -- dude, this rocks =) Hope to see an update soon! |
