Yep, pretty much. I saw this show recently about all the big constuction projects that are happening in Dubai currently. Those oil-rich nations such as Saudi Arabia have estimated that their oil producing capacity will only be around for another 20 years. So, even on a stretch, in 40 years, they'll be dead in the water. They have this time, while they're stinking rich, to build the biggest and the best, to create a tourist haven and create a whole new market economy there based around tourism and such. I guess it's their plan for the future stability of the nation. |

Yeah but Tokyo has a lot more going for it than Dubai...one of the world's largest cities, the most expensive city in the world, and in a very well developed country :) A little different than Dubai...either way it's a bit rediculous 2km tower is pointless...I mean WOHOO awesome...it'll be a wonder of the world but it's completely impractical. Imagine having a fire alarm and the elevators not working :p :p :p (something that happends in my condo regularly) |

I saw this conceptual design of a building they want to build in either Tokyo or some other asian city, I forget the details. It was designed to go miles into the sky, where basically it was the shape of a pyramid, but only the outlines. Each point of axis was a sphere housing parks, building, basically a couple of city blocks, and there were these huge tunnels connecting it all together.
