He is the best Pope in decades. We all owe him a debt of gratitude for what he's done.... in particular, his role in freeing Eastern Europe. He almost died for his actions (USSR/commie scum tried to assassinate him with a Muslim assassin). |
i could owe him jack and i could care less, to me he is like any other religious leader.
Hell i dont belive in my own, i think they are full of crap anyhow. |

he just sufferred heart failure .. i know his fight to live is largely symbolic in his mind .. i hope he can go on living for as long as possible ..
i know some of you here aren't religious , but that aside, whether or not you are , this Pope did accomplish a lot in his papacy, far more than many Popes before him .. and if that alone can help change things for the better .. then that alone earns my respect ..
besides, regardless if he's the Pope or any other joe on the street .. why would one want to talk about someone who's nearing death in such a disrespectful manner?

My thinking is this. Despite the vatican's posturing that the Pope is god's representive on earth his real function is to direct the theological direction of the church and to act as the CEO of the Vatican's vast commercial enterprise.
As a Theological leader JPII has been extremely progressive. Granted, the church is still well behind the times by North American and Western European standards but one must remember that the church ministers to approximately 2 billion people, the majority of whom live in very conservative third world or developing nations. Because of this reality the church can only change at a pace that will not destabalize their base of support in these countries. JPII has done a great deal to modernize the church.... he forgave the Jews, he's allowed for interfaith marriage, he has allowed for divorce (in moderation), he has attempted to reconsile the issues of the refermation, he has made great steps toward making peace with the protestant denominations, etc. He has been a good Theological leader for the church.
My fear is that the next pope will be far more conservative and either stop the progress that JPII has made or worse yet prevent it. My understanding is that the current front-runner is Cardinal Dionigi Tettamanzi Archbishop of Milano .... a very conservative Bishop who has opposed many of of the Pope's more liberal decreys.
As an admistraitor of the Vatican's commercial/political part I cannot really comment as I have no idea what he's done in this regard... trying to trace the Vatican's business dealings is nearly impossible.
Even beyond the cleargy aspect of JPII, Karol Jozef Wojtyla must be regarded as a great man. He helped thousands of Jews and Slavs avoid capture by the Nazis during the second great war, he's mediated between super powers, he's made empassioned pleas for peace, he's negotiated relife for third world countries, established and worked in charities to assist the poor and ill, plus countless other good deeds. Granted these are part and parcel with being a clergyman but they are not actions taken by all clergy.
No matter how you look at it JPII/Karol Wjotyla's life has had a huge impact on this world and his death will have an equally large impact. |

I just watched "Eurotrip" for the first time on HBO, and the whole part that takes place in the Vatican is really giving me the creeps:nervous:
I wonder when we will see the smoke, I'm sure the media will be all over that:rolleyes: |
