well it looks as though i am the first one to post for the review here and well the first time i am really posting on TA too!
J00F was just a rockin! it was my first time seeing him and i don't have anything to say but what an amazing set that kept me dancing til the early hours of this morning.. i showed up with chris and rodger tonight and deserted them most of the time to stay on the dance floor! He also stayed to chat with a few of us after his set.. what an awesome and down to earth guy i tell ya.
As for Republik.. nice club.. clean, good atmosphere and lots of room to dance which was nice for a change.
cuzo,it was good to see you again... i had missed partying with you!
and Finary, Starsearcher, RJ, Gamma and Dennis.. it was great to meet you all!

Republik is a very nice club. Pretty good atmosphere. J00F was just amazing. I wish he started earlier so that I could stay for his whole set, and other people that did not even know he was there would be introduced to his music. |

Last night was my 1st visit to Republik. Club is setup really well. J00F was dropping a pretty quick paced set. Stayed for fisrt 2 hours of his set. Had a great time. |

the lighting is good and i thought the sound system was amazing...
crowd was alright.. most of the people were found in the hip hop room though, main room wasn't as packed and near the end it was pretty much empty..
i would definitely go back to Republik or recommend going to check it out! |

Had a great time! After a pleasant drive in a snowstorm I arrived from Cambridge rather early, just after 1:30, to see the tail end of the bar crowd. It was interesting watch things slowly make the change from the bar crowd to the after hours crowd. I have to say I was pretty impressed Republik. The layout of the mainroom was a bit different from what I was expecting from the pictures, but it still looked wicked. Plasma everywhere, including in front of the urinals, and all sorts of cool lighting from the curtains in the mainroom to the vertical bars on the front stage.
As for the man himself, John 00, he did not disappoint. At 2:45 John went to work and yet again delivered a lesson in DJing. Seamless mix after seamless mix, accompanied by programming that would have even the most hard to please punter up and dancing. Great charisma behind the decks and even as the crowd dwindled he never lost his enthusiasm and kept the remaining people on the dance floor.
My first experience at Republik was a great one. I really hope that this place does well as an after hours club. It's clear that a lot of thought and planning went into making this place right. Best of luck to all those involved.
edit: As always it was a pleasure hanging with the TA's.
RJ and Ray, great seeing you guys!! I don't get to chill with you dudes nearly enough!
Del, Nice to finally meet you and put a face to the random msn hasslings! :p
Dennis, As always mate! ;) K-dub representing!
Cuzo, Nice to meet you man! You sure looked like you were enjoying J00f to the fullest!!
Jesse, Good seeing you dude, best of luck with all your Republik adventures. I'll hoook up those Southpraks soon! |

Alright I'm finally up! *YAWNS* :happy2: A little review time...
Got out of the house at around 7:45 and had to go to a friend's b-day dinner party at Montana's across the street from Republik. The plan was that after that we'll go to Mink (last time I was there it was called Spa lounge or something...) and after at around 2am I'll head over to Republik. So got downtown at around 8:30, walked out of the subway and almost fell over  IT WAS SOOOOOOOOOO FUUUKING NASTY OUTSIDE! What is it? April 2nd and it's freezing cold and rain/snow. NASTY!
Anyway to make a long story short, we had dinner headed over to Mink and IT SUCKED ASS!!! :wtf: I was under the impression (from the Mink website and my friend) that we are going to experience an upscale clubbing experience in Toronto. So, I dressed up, made somewhat of an effort to look spiffy...what I got was ANYTHING BUT an upscale experience. First of all the strict dresscode was pure BS, 2/3rd of the people were in jeans and t-shirts. Not to mention that it was a total cockfest with a few cougars, a couple of nasty girls and SLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEZYY guys everywhere ready to grab ass. Drinks were REDICULOUSLY overpriced, I bought 2 shots for my friend and I and paid something like $14!!!! :wtf: Basically bottom line...DONT GO THERE! It sucks ass! If you want an "upscale" clubbing experience definitely look elsewhere.
I suffered in that place as long as I could (for my friend) and at around 1:15 had enough and headed over to Republik. Got to the door really quickly, no line, really easy going bouncers, LOVE those crazy cool Soviet era style coats they had! Walked into the club and my jaw dropped!!! :eyespop: :eyes: OMFG it looks AMAZING!!! Definitely my new favourite club!!! Well ok in very close competition with the Guvernment at least...but MAN it was SO incredible looking. You know when everyone was drooling over the pictures the first time they came out...well it's BETTER! Loved it!!! Music was pumping, the crowd was REALLY nice actually I was really impressed. Not too packed but a good amount of people. Saw Swamper pretty much as soon as I came in, said hello! Then DJ Hordash ran by...so far so good. Really really hot girls everywhere too ;) ;) ;) Decided to walk around a bit to see what the place is like. Went across the hall to what turned out to be the hip-hop room. IT WAS PACKED!!!!!!! (Naturally) Really impressive set-up design everywhere! Decided to head over to the vip/smoking lounge upstairs to check out what it's all about and chat with Mirza for a bit. Unfortunately I had to stay in line for about 20 minutes to get up there but when I got there the place was 70% empty...so not really sure why the long wait. :conf:
Anyway...came down and ran into Cuzo (tanned bastard - looks like Miami did him good!!!), RJ, Gamma, and all the other guys (magikb is a super cutie!). They did the whole walking around too while I headed over to near the DJ booth area. Didn't even realize at first that the screens/lights on the ceiling go UP AND DOWN!  and then spin around    The opening DJ was good but I got the feeling he was keeping it easy for J00F to take over. :happy2: J00F came on at about 2:30 or so and was AMAZING!!! Naturally there were lots of people that were leaving at that time but the place was still buzzing with people and excitement. I have to say that I'm quite impressed with the turnout and the amount of people in that place considering it was open for only 2 weeks or so. Super job guys! :happy2: :happy2: :happy2:
Anyway, AMAZING end to the night which started rather ty.
The club: 14/10
J00F: 10/10
Crowd: 10/10
So far an amazing place by my standards I will DEFINITELY be coming back. Everyone should go check it out! It's beautiful! Just too bad that Ferry is here the same day as Johan Gielen :( otherwise I'd be there for sure!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |

Incredible set by JOOF. What eles can be said? Hard pumpin beats all the way through - nice remix of the Chems Hey Boy Hey Girl near the end capped it of nicely for me! Wasn't sure how he would spin last night but it was clear right from the start he was gonna go a full-on assault on the decks and wow did he ever!! Finally got to check out the club and gotta say I liked what I saw. Only complaints I would have would be the massive amount of ginos and the stupid dress code before 1:30 like really what's up with that? I had to go home and change my shoes and come back - ridiculous. Then I see ppl with running shoes all over the place later in the night and find out that they drop the dress code at 1:30 - guys I'm sorry but that's the stupidest policy EVER. Either have a dress code or not - don't change it up halfway through the night or "After the Vote" In all honesty - for a DJ like JOOF - ppl are gonna want to dance all night so give us a break and let us wear some comfortable shoes! I can understand no ripped jeans etc. but chillax on the shoes!
Also having a broken ATM and no debit taken at the bars wow....not a good scene I can tell you! I hope this gets solved soon cuz I can tell you thank god for Visa or we would have been dry all night and that would not have been good at all! But aside from these two beefs I really liked the way the club is laid out and the lighting/visuals and sound system are all very impressive and definitely added to the awesome set thrown down by JOOF.
Looking forward to hitting Republik again...hopefully with working ATMs and maybe a more lax dress code perhaps ;) |

wow, what can be said about J00f, the man is a legend. I had never heard him before this point, only some productions and word of mouth from one of my friends. He totally blew me away, the bass was just destroying me all night. Only one complaint, and it's not even a complaint about the club ( i will get to that review soon). There were a pack of...well i guess you could call them gangsters, who took up a copius amount of room close to the elevated stage next to the booth, now normally i wouldn't mind, infact, i probably wouldn't have noticed, but these guys were just taking up room all over the place trying to pick up women, i mean, i was just sitting there dancing, and they'd constantly run into you, and just be all assholish about it, if you wanna come to a club to just try and get laid, that's fine, but stop bothering people who are there to dance and enjoy the fine music of J00f, but thankfully, karma struck, and ironically, so did the hands of like 3 girls across this one guys face. which did bring a smile to mine :).
About the club, the line-up was quick and easy, little mis-communication with the bouncers trying to close the doors at 12:30, but hey, i got in, so i don't care.
The coat check was quick and painless, drinks were affordable and the service was excellent. Smoking room line was long, but hey, them's the breaks of being a smoker. Other than the gangsters, the night was phenominal, and i will be coming back for more. |

Really good night last night.
Got to the club at 8pm (yes, 8pm) to get acquainted some of the staff there... really nice meeting them and of coarse good to see some old friends again as well.
Lil Pete played a terrific set. Obviously started commercial to cater to the drinking crowd be he did an excellent job moving that into a more housy tribal sound for Peter Ivals to come on at 1. Peter took over and managed to keep a solid portion of the early crowd in for his whole set til J00F came on. Really good set there.
At just after 2:30 John came on as as usual, did NOT disappoint. He's obviously a psy-trance dj now, but I always enjoy the start of his sets when he plays that deep trance sound... so intelligent and thick, I was going nuts to it on that Republik system. He then worked in to some dirty, bassy psy-trance for the rest of his set, people were loving it! Awesome set!
I thought the crowd was good last night too, even the commercial crowd... overall very friendly. Obviously there seemed to be a little confusion on the dancelfloor when the changover of sounds happened around 1:30am, but it's just going to take a little time for the format to sink in with people, that's all :)
Got to chance to catch up with J00F which is always nice... also really good to see you again Del, Ari... Jay, great to meet you dude, nice work on the lights :) ...the numerous TA's in attendance, great to see you guys out and always great to meet new ones too.
Keep supporting this club, it only gets better from here!
Cheers!
Dennis :)
PS- glad to make it home alive! Lost control of my car and almost hit a wall on the 401 coming home! :eyespop: |
