You have got to be kidding me! Despite what you may think it is not an easy task to shoot someone... even if you feel threatened. My guess is your average minimum wage (I couldn't pass the enterance exam) rent-a-cop wouldn't be able to muster the courage to confront a gunman even if they were equally armed. Besides that, hitting a target from more then 50 yards with a handgun is a difficult task to say the least.... Marc Lapine had a Ruger .223 Mini 14 ranch rifle, one of the most powerful and accurate small rifles availible in Canada at that time he's going to win that 50 yard shoot off every time (FYI, I own a mini 14, the concussion from that thing going off alone is frightening enough to make most people duck and cover). |

AH OK! Point taken...
But that law you described above is silly too...STRICT no doubt but silly. What's the point of having a gun then? (Not that I think that citizens should have guns) And imagine being arrested if you took a detour and your gun was with you, cause you had a "concealed weapon".
In the states they have a lot more voilent crimes though, so what this bill sounds like is a fancy self-defence law. While I don't have a problem with. But what I DO have a problem with (and what some of you mentioned in a very funny way :p) how the hell are you going to decide when you're threatened, and who will decide that for you in court? |
Agreed, at first look the hand gun... or rather the restricted arms... laws are excessively strict. That being said one also has to bear in mind that there is no legal use for any restricted weapons on Canada's restricted arms list other then target shooting. With that in mind mobility of weapon isn't really a priority when contrasted with the risk of weapons being stolen. When I had my hand guns I understood the necessity of reporting their wearabouts at all times.... if my car got stolen and the guns were in it the police know what arms the theif now has, how much amunition, as well as the serial numbers to trace them. Understanding aside, it is a pain in the ass.
Your second paragraph is the real danger with this sort of law. If you get a good-old boy in the northern "red-neck" area of FLA kill a low income black man, put him on trial in front of 12 other good-old boys then you can be certain he will succeed in this self defence argument no mater what the circumstances. |

You honestly think having everyone carry guns is the answer, and that wouldn't create new problems that would wipe out the gains made by stopping those few tragedies? |

In your world, only insane criminals have guns, which they use against innocent people.
There's nothing wrong with upstanding citizens defending innocent people from madmen. |

I agree with you that responsible citizens should be allowed to own fire arms... I am one and I do. That being said I'm rather happy knowing the odds are pretty low that the guy I accidently bumped into is packing a .45.
See the problem with letting everyone have a gun is that if you do that nearly everyone will have a gun. If someone gets pissed off to the point they lose it and they're carrying a hand gun there is a chance they'll start shooting. If they lose it and have to drive home, unlock their gun safe, pull out their .303 hunting rifle, undo the breach lock, go upstairs, unlock the ammo box, load the 5 cartriage magazine, drive back, and find the guy that pissed them off before they start shooting there is either a good chance they will calm down or the guy really deserves to be shot. |
