Yes, it's that time of the year already! I'm finally back with a tune.
This is my first ever attempt at a remix, and I decided to demolish John & Renco's fantastic tune 'Stonefusion - Echoes'. It's not ideal, but hopefully there are some redeeming features in there... :p

*EDITED WITH CLEARER REVIEW*
Right from the start, I don't like that marching-band rhythm acidline. It does not grab my attention. Try changing the rhythm to something more syncapated. So far I am expecting something interesting to come on. The sines are nice, but wait, I love the synth coming in on every 4th quarter note of every measure. Excellent way to build tension! Perhaps you can turn down those sines. They're not the main lead, so what's the point of having them so loud? I'm trying to focus on the main lead, but the background sine is distracting from it. On a positive note, you are very good when it comes to cutting leads through the beats. The main lead that comes in a 16th before every 2nd downbeat is very well done. Nice pads, although they could be better. The notation is good. Try focusing on getting a more realistic pad sound. From what I hear, it sounds like an obvious lead wet in reverb. Changing the amp envolope in the synth could be helpful. Try turning up the attack and release on the amplitude envolope, and perhaps putting a very subtil filter LFO in its signal path. As I listen more, the sines still seem to be distracting. It would work if the sines were the main melody, but since they are not, it is quite annerving.
As for the mastering, the buildup is clipping. You might want to consider turning the master volume down on the entire track. As I listen, there's more clipping when the kick doubles up for a roll.
You might also want to liven up that lead that is doing quarter notes. Try to add variety. Perhaps, it could be doing quarter notes for every first bar and every other bar, have it ride the rhythm with some syncapated notes.
At the outro, the marchy acidline is heard clearly again. I don't really like it. It reminds me of Valentin. The radio used to play Valentin remixes of top40 pop songs. I didn't really care much for his style, although in QED, it is pretty cool. |

Cheers for the comments guys, and thanks for writing such a detailed response Gerry! :D
With regards to the clipping, I always find the mastering to be very difficult. I know "a poor workman blames his tools", but my ty laptop speakers are a bit useless. :p
@ronk: Yeah, the kick was a sample, but it needed a lot of EQ and compression to bring the punchyness out... :)
Thanks for your help guys! |

I havent checked out the original so I cant compare.
.58 Nice bass.
2.22 nice layering. they go well together. The sounds are very generic. Interesting phasing hihats, i like em :p
2.55 break. warm bass.
3.18 great new layer there.
4.23 ....nice buildup.
Comes together well at the end
Its a great, well produced tune. I dont have any critism on this one. Thanks for sharing Foundamental.

I really like the main melody and the bass - great tune, Joe. Nice harmony you've got there.
The only thing I didn't really like was the sound of the synths you used before the first breakdown (the "marching band" one and the other that plays every "4-7-12-15"). Other than that, two thumbs up: One for you and another one for Hedgie :D |

Yeah, PC speakers are terrible reference speakers! Laptop even worse. Don't worry, you wouldn't have heard the distortion on laptop speakers. It's not that you have crap ears or anything.
Sorry for that really inunderstandable review, with kiddy typing and bad grammar. I edited the review, so now it makes more sense. I was reading it to myself and was thinking, "man this doesn't make much sense" |

Another 303 newbe.
hehe.
Those 303s aren't good at all.
Try getting a saw 303 with really short notes.
the sines are pissing me off.
The riff is ok.
good pads.
the lead isn't powerful enough.
The track doesn't have any good atmosphere.
I don't like it.

| Yeah Luke's right. there are none... maybe cheap 303 samples with reverb, but not a real 303 synth or an emulator of that synth. |
