speaking of simplicity, this right here sums my entire viewpoint on the matter to perfection.
and i also agree with luke.sykes post. and i love g&d.
and on another note, i hate the way 'cheese' is thrown around as a derogatory term all the friggin time in trance, seemingly to undermine tracks the majority of the crowd actually enjoys. |

F_ck!! Where have I been for the last two days?!?!
This is one of the all-time most entertaining threads, and only now I find it!!..
Hmmm.. I don't think that it is, or should be, the express purpose of a forum to convert others beliefs over to your own, or to argue until a unanimous conclusion is agreed upon. Rather, discussing what we like and why means we can get to know where each other fit's in in the musical mosaic of the scene. I think the whole subjectivity debate: "define art" is redundant- the site is called "TranceAddict" as opposed to "AvanteGardeWhatever" so there's an assumption that we're on the same page, or in the same ball park, or in the same skanky club, without delving into semantics :)
Back on topic: Generally, a vocal has to have a lot of integrity to make it past 1st base with me.. many vocals written for electronic tunes don't cut this mustard :( 'No one on earth' is a good example- nice production, but the melody is generic, labored, and uninteresting (imo, and might I say by stark contrast to certain other A&B tunes). And the lyrics blow (once again, just imho). Instead, I find that tracks that are written for other genre's work better when re-interpreted (heck... ya may as well bring some of the guitars and percussion too if it fits nice!!). The acid test for a vocal is whether it would stand on it's own as a powerful melody and lyric ie. performed purely a capella, or with a guitar and light percussion, and still send chills down my spine. Those are the good vocal tunes imo :)
Having said that, some electronic vocal tracks put me off at first but grow on me after a while- 'come around again' is a good example of that.. (NB: which could be done acoustic/a capella too..)
I feel that a track's appeal to others does play a small part in whether I'd like/play it too. The same small part that made me sing "sweet child of mine" in a covers band 5 years ago (wtf am I admitting to here?!? :o :o ), and as a result, that tune grew on me.. so never say never is my rule :)
I don't sing much, but not for lack of wanting to, but for lack of lyrical genius (or basic lyrical aptitude for that matter) :( So, I tend to shun vocals that are whiney (not to be confused with powerful & melancholic - there's a difference), or sappy (not to be confused with beautiful, uplifting, and poetic). Thing is, there's a fine line trodden here, and the meaning of some songs might not click immediately so don't judge too fast.
And people- just a reminder: don't take too seriously :D:D:D |

| was chatting the other night and I heard a piece of info I liked in that by playing a vocal (even a "cheesy" one) you never loose people from a dance floor you only gain.... |

3:14:00 AM: DJ drops urban train
3:14:10 AM: Dance floor fills up
3:15:20 AM: Vocals come in of some silly whinging strangled cat 'uuuurbaan traiiin -aiin -aaiin aaiin'
3:15:27 AM: Dancefloor empty enough to land a MEDIVAC helicopter on

Completely went off at most recent ANOT with the thrillseekers! |
Thanks Pho Mo that's good to hear (cause I wasn't there to hear it).
Personally I love vocal trance. A good female voice can be a instrament to add to a track.. even if the original idea was just instrumental. Just depends on how well it's done it needs to add to the track not just be thrown over the top for the sake of making it more commercial. |

I was front and centre for that one. I think it came on just after or a few songs after Someday. It worked pretty well...
Whats so bad about a little vocals anyway. , you could be out listening to house instead of vocal trance... now that would be bad... |
