I'm not sure if hip-hop is rap, since I'm a sucker at genres, but Nas's Illmatic is one of the greatest EPs of all-time. The guy's a genius. Some may complain he hit a little mainstream, but he still has just as many fans in the underground world as in the commercial world.

If only Nas wrote a diss to 50 Cent! But Nas wouldn't sink that low. It's like me kicking a four years olds ass.

i think he meant to post this as a reply, a mod needs to merge this thread with the hip hop thread.

nas has busted out some pretty amazing tracks in his day but i'm quite particular to the gorup "binary star" and "jurassic 5"

I seriously never get tired of their tracks.

more mainstream artists i love, regardless of how commercial or uncreative they're tracks are, are NERD and Jay-Z

the above artists are probably the only thing i listen to besides house, trance and techno.

To an extent, yes - but I'd still rate people like Chuck D, Rakim, KRS-One (specifically KRS-One) and so forth above him. He's undoubtedly a good lyricist - but he can be immature and slip into gangsta rap cliche and good old fashioned homophobia in songs like Ether. It's particularly frustrating because you know that he isn't a simple minded idiot, and that he can produce stuff that is on a different level to most mainstream hip hop.

I think he said he'd consider replying when 50 releases 5 or 6 more albums so they're 'on the same level'. :p
