As some of you know, im still in high school, and will be graduating next year. i have some plans for college, etc etc, but the main thing i want to do it take a gap year. duing this gap year i want to move to toronto, get a job, find a cheap place to stay and live there for a year, before i go to college (ill most likely go to college in toronto or somewhere in eastern canada)
is this at all possible? could i get a full time job and semi support myself? food, place to stay, and enough left over for some fun on the weekends, clubbing partying etc? id like to work in retail, music shop, clothes shop, something like this. Im canadian and have a canadian passport so there would be no legal issues regarding that.
of course id also be promoting myself as a dj, but i wouldnt count on that at all for any income, as it is a chance game.
some of you will think, what a ign dumb idea for a gap year, but for me its the logical choice, and i am drawn to it. ive already traveled the world, and want to be somewhere on my own for once.
any comments or ideas would be greatly appreciated. |

Change is good and I think you should follow your heart, it might be hard doing most of the things that you want to do. But I think you should do, just be smart about it and have everything set up before you make the move. |

You might find it a bit of a challenge getting a visa that will allow you to stay here for a year without going to school or having some sort of job already lined up (and even then, to get a work visa, you have to demonstrate that you're providing unique skills which are in demand and can't easily be filled by Canadians).
Edit: Scratch that... just read the bit about you being Canadian and having a passport. :) |

you can if you have experience in your feild.
eastern canada in my opinion dont go there. you wont enjoy it as much as toronto. boring schools and unis from a lot of people i hear, who work with me studied there.
yeah its possible depending on how much youll be paying on rent and living costs maybe you can save a bit.
oh btw you dont have to do much to qualify to become a toronto TA.lol just sign up on tranceaddict.:haha: i think pretty much everyone is qualified.:wtf: |

| Toronto, Montreal or vancouver is your best bet.. Montreal has the cheapest living costs but if you dont speak french you are pretty much screwed there. |

hey, thanks for the replies,
any idea how much a 1 bedroom semi decent apt would cost?
also, id be expecting minimum wage, which is how much in canada?
and last but not least its a 40 hr. workweek for full time?
i just wanna know how possible this is.
thanks in advance. |

Current minimum is $7.45/hr.
If you want your own one bedroom, you're probably looking at $800 / month or so at the absolute bottom end. |

ok, so if im working 40 hours a week, not including possible overtime, ill be making 1200 dollars a month.
is 400 dollars enough for personal expenses? granted ill have some money saved up, but not a substancial amount, prolly a thousand US, maybe a little more..
thanks again, |

why are u scaring the poor guy!
yes minimum wage is around 7 bucks but that doesnt mean u will be working for that amount. if you have any kinds of skills (sales, telemarketing etc) you will atleast get $10/hour and thats pretty low especially downtown call centers pay alot more.
also $800/room..wtf!! maybe for a luxury suite, my friend is renting a one bedroom place around yonge and bloor area with a private kitchen and washroom all inclusive for $500.
you just have to look for good deals! |
