Is there anything wrong with putting a couple of old tunes in your demo?

sure; its cool to bring back old tunes, somehow get this nostalgic feeling :)

| Putting old "hits" in your demo will not be to your advantage. Putting old tracks that people haven't heard before on the other hand.. |

| Why not, as a promoter, i've given sets to people who have put "anthems" in their demo, as it was in suiting with the flow of the demo. If it is an accurate display of what a DJ would play, whats the harm, after all, who doesn't throw a few anthems into their set when they're playing? |

well lets just say if someone was putting binary finary - 1999 and lost tribe - gamemaster in their demo...i probably wouldn't book them...

Then again, there are promoters who don't care about the music as long as it pulls the people in and keeps them happy. Feeding them anthems is one way of accomplishing that.
And as for playing anthems in a set now and then sure, everyone does that. And that is exactly why you shouldn't put them on your demo, as you'd want your mix to stand out. |

| Personally, I'd much rather see a DJ digging up some older, less known quality tracks for the 'geez, I haven't heard THAT one in a while'-factor than him / her just putting together a demo solely containing tunes from the latest three or four top 10's / playlists of his / her favourite DJ or radio show. Everybody does that. |

| Your demo has to stand out. It's up to you to decide how you want to do that; whether through inclusion of upfront new tracks, lesser-known oldies, unique mixing or track selection, etc. Just don't sound the same as everyone else, or you don't have a chance. |

| i think as a house dj, its difficult to put huuge hits in ur demo, but old tunes which may never have gotten the repsect/fame or whatever, are defintely ok. as long as the flow of your demo remains consistent |

maybe one or two, but try to make a flow that doesn't rely on it |

By older tunes I did not necessarily mean tracks that have been whored out more than Paris Hilton. I just meant to say that I appreciate DJ's using older tracks in their mix (when fitting, of course) rather than just glueing (sp?) together a bunch of the newest releases. |
