The new pope is the German. Someone tell me how they decide what name they're gonna call themselves. This guy just went from being John Q. Smithenweizter to Pope Benedict XVI. |
They usually name themselves after previous popes or saints which they hold as being the closest to their own planned way of reigning. In other words, he aims to be similar to the first (or every other for that matter) Benedict(s).
And yes he was in Hitlerjungen, but it wasn't a voluntary organization, every german kid was forced into it. It is, however, an interesting coincidence considering his rather strict and ortodox views... |

I'm truely disappointed. Both in a serious and in a comical context.
In a serious context, his choice makes it clear that the church has not learned from its previous mistakes (being an extremely stubborn institution). Claiming that "Only in the Catholic church is there eternal salvation" is a really narrow-minded statement for the leader of a 1 billion follower religion.
It also makes it clear that it's the Roman Apostholic (sp?) Church... I wonder for how long the Catholic church will cease to be an exclusively "European" religion in spite of having only 25% of total followers in that continent.
As for the comical context... let's face it - the Nigerian pope would totally rock!
Nay, I'm not converting back to Catholicism.
edit: It's just a transition pope anyway... let's see what who's next. |

I am a little confused. The choice of Pope is allegedly made by God with the Cardinals acting as servants. So why are so many Africans and Latin Americans pissed off about the choice. After all it was God's choice.
Though, they do have a right to be since he was a clear favourite from the start. I wonder what is God's point of view on this. |

Because God's sense of rockness has completely vanished. Otherwise he would've chosen the Nigerian pope, who would totally rock! Or Jackie Chan... I'd immediately convert back to Christianity if he were the pope. |

Yes it is an interesting situation, it seems to be devisive within the Catholic church, at a local level last night i listened to our national radio station which had a 1 1/2 hour discussion on the new pope, this was a really good programme its usually a political programme but current affairs also, they had many theologians priests bishops etc and also lay people. But i dont think i have ever heard so much dissent from irish priests before, not so openly anyway.A lot of them had serious objections to the new pope and thought it as a retrograde step as regards the catholic church.
Just in reference to your point about it being Gods choice, they also interviewed some of the cardinals who were involved in the election process and each of them said they felt "Gods hand of guidence" in coming to the decision as to whom they would vote for, now presumably not every Cardinal voted for Ratzinger, so you would wonder how "Gods hand of guidence" worked for those that didnt vote for him, as it dosent seem to be a universal guidence if the cracks are now beginning to appear, but i suppose freewill and all that, would be argued against me....(does this make sense to anybody else...just something i thought of it as the Cardinals spoke last night...maybe my thoughts arent clear enough?....anyway) |
