If you're suddenly without a BPM counter, you can still mix by ear, but it's likely that the songs will match only for THAT part of the mix, and diverge a little later, meaning they will have slightly different BPM's.
I have a friend who DJ's without a BPM counter. He thinks that good mixing is when you get a part that matches, and then, as soon as the songs start diverging, you finish off the mix. I think that's wrong because the BPM's are, in reality, a little different. If they were the same this wouldn't happen. So I think the BPM counter is great if you have one -- use it to your advantage! |
Ehh yeah I think you have just clearly stated why BPM counter is useless...if it doesn't display bpm with 3 decimals (like 141.319) your mix is gonna go off. Anyways I can't hear by ear what bpm a record is. I don't care either. As long as i can beatmatch by ear and hear when the tempo is nice n pumpin. |

Well, experienced DJ's can probably beatmatch extremely well without a BPM counter -- they can get the exact tempos lined up.
But, I think that if you have the help of a BPM counter, you can concentrate more on artistic aspects of the mix, rather than the technical ones.
I know that it's not perfect and it makes mistakes sometimes -- but it does help a lot. I have Gemini BPM-150. |

| Anyone who uses a beat counter is just useless and e. beatmatching is a skill and is the most fun part about putting a good mix together beat counters just take any real skill out of mixing and take away the challenge of gettin the beats both at the same tempo. |

My fav two tracks to mix are
1. utah saints - lost vagueness with cygnus x - superstrings
and it is takening me a while (5weeks so far) to bring in a record then not touch it ever again until it is time to change again |

how do u think they get experience with beat matching? if u start using a BPM counter u'll get used to it, than mixing by ear won't be a priority to u. so when it comes to mixing without BPM counter there will be trainwrecks all the time. heres an example, if u know how to drive a car with automatic tranny and never drove manual before at first when u get on manual u'll stall, so u get same thing when u use BPM all the time and then go without it |

Beatmatching isn't that hard. It just takes a lot of practice. Once you got the beatmatching down, there's plenty of time to think about the artistic part of your mix. BTW isn't djing all about the technique. This is how you separate the great from the pathetic(although track selection plays a big part too). When there's two guys with an equally great track selection, but one of them is trainwrecking all over the place, while the other one's mixing is flawless. You tend to opt for the technically more refined dj, eh.
I normally beatmatch a record in about 30 seconds to a minute(and that's when I'm taking my time to get it perfect). If you're spinning a tune of about 8 mins that leaves you ample of time to think about your mix and even browse through all of your record cases looking for that record goes perfectly with the previous one.
The coolest sounding mix I ever did was Cass and Slide: Opera(Beckett's Phantoms only mix)into Bedrock: Heaven Scent(Evolution Main Mix). The two tracks were indistinguishable. |

Nice mix AndiH, would work nice with the Tiesto mix too.
I personally like Push - Universal Nation (Ferry Corsten Mix) into Picotto - Lizard, with Lizard layered over the top, I shall post a sample soon.
I started DJing 4 years ago with CDs and without a BPM counter and no EQ I could beatmatch within 2 weeks well. I let my DJing skills go to pot as I stopped DJing for a year. I got my decks at the start of the month and could beatmatch to a professional level within days. BPM counters are , you are only a good DJ if you can beat-match without it. I offer a challenge to any counter DJ to see how well they can do without it. |
