so.pointless.

Would you feel this way if you were one of the DJ's hired to play the afterparty? Nike Run TO (as it was called 2 years ago) is also an event, party, etc. Can people not just do something because its fun and not because its for charity? We all go to parties, concerts, movies, restaurants to enjoy ourselves, why does a run have to be for charity?

I'm sorry if I sound harsh, but a customer of gave me a hard time today when I told him I might run this if my knee holds up over the next few weeks (knee surgery a little while back). I do things for charity, donate to charities, but that doesn't mean everything I do has to be for charity. Can't we just do things for s and giggles anymore without feeling guilty?

Well said. I agree w/ you 100%. Doing for yourself is just as justified as doing for others. Sure its nice (and helpful and supportive) if you wanna run for charity, but no way in hell should somenoe make you feel guilty bc your NOT doing it for charity!

Im glad you ranted. It was a good point.

I joined up on the urging from a friend in school about two weeks ago. Just came back from jog. Have a while to go before I can comfortably do 10k :p

I'll add +1 to the adidas side as well :D
Only thing I don't quite see about this event is the actual point, besides getting more publicity for Nike, since there seems to be a questionabley amount of 'charity' involved with this.

just write them a check, watch NASCAR or shake-it to DDTT instead.

I'm doing the 10k... I think my ferry leaves at 10:30 but I'm trying to get that pushed back if possible.

As for the whole marketing thing - I'm just doing this run as sort of a challenge to myself. I've climbed the CN Tower 5 times so I thought I'd try something different...? :haha:

Why do you choose to run in THIS race in particular then?

a 10K is a 10K. Why would you choose to run for Nike instead of, say, breast cancer?

If I were given the option of PAYING to DJ at an event by Nike or an event by a charity, I would of course do it for the charity.

Yeah, but the Nike RunTO campaign never images itself to be a charity event. Your point is still valid though, if doing a 10k is the main concern, there are probably better events than this.
Anyone know what we actually get out of that 50 bucks? A t-shirt? :p
I haven't filled out the forms yet, gonna set the ferry time to 1, don't want to show up too early.
Skipper
It's just personal preference - if I can do something and help a good cause at the same time, I will. I'm not saying I wont participate in anything unless its for charity - that'd be an impossible rule to live by.

But to me this is like paying to be part of a marketing campaign for a global sweatshop organization, or signing up to benefit a good cause. If I'm gonna run a 10 K anyways..

Because its more than just a race, its an event. There are bands, DJ's, etc. over on the island. It just sounds like a fun way to spend an afternoon on the island.

Let's face it everytime we buy anything "name brand" - Calvin Klien underwear, Diesel jeans, Nike running shoes, Coach handbags, what ever name brand that is recognized, you are a part of a marketing campaign.

We overpay for items for the "name" all the time.

You have to admit those little 8 year old girls do make great shoes too.
